  1. Heh...this whole name discussion is cracking me up. I've mentioned before that I used to be active in the Society for Creative Anachronism, which is a group that recreates the Middle Ages. My name in that group is Lady Jocelyn Alewife (hence, my screen name in the Clay fandom). Two of my best friend's names are Baron Roghallach the Strong and Baroness Maria Teresa Riberio dos Santos. Of course, they have "regular" names in real life. So....this whole thing with screen names (which are MUCH easier in the Clay fandom) and real life names is something I've gone through for a long time. Actually, my time in the SCA prepared me for Clay fandom in another way. When I first joined up, it was not uncommon at all to just throw a sleeping bag in your trunk while someone opened up their house to you for sleeping and such. Everyone was quite open in that way -- they still are. You'd end up staying in the home of someone you'd never met until that particular day. Sound familiar? Back to the name thing for a second. I'll tell you a secret -- offer to do name tags for the next Clay party you attend. You'll learn screen names/real names toot sweet. I got to know a LOT of people that way. CG, I totally understand your reaction to MGUCL. I've mentioned this before, that I'm NOT a lyric person. Give me a great melody, and someone could be singing all cuss words and I'd be like "GREAT SONG!" But, last Christmas, I remember listening to the AIW CD as I was on a scavenger hunt for more copies of the CD (I think I ended up buying about 17 copies my area, to be shipped to others in the country). It was a rainy, dreary evening -- almost freezing rain. MGUCL came on, and for some reason the lyrics hit me. Hard. So I was crying my eyes out. Quiana did a fantastic job, but Clay made that song his own at that particular moment for me.
  2. CG, the actual print copy of the TV Guide Fall TV Season preview came out two weeks ago. Here's their online version.
  3. My husband and a group of his friends do SEVERAL John Prine songs. He's a fantastic songwritier. "Paradise" is my favorite. That's how I see it too. I think with both of these choices, he thought he found songs that fit their respective voices, and I think he may have been hoping that both ladies would find the emotional connection. (For the record, I think Angela connected with her song better than Quiana, but I also think that both ladies KICKED BUTT!). Bolding mine. Again, agree two hundred percent. He seems to enjoy their company (and they his). Sure, I'd love to be selfish and want more and more of Clay, but I also want him to do what he thinks will make him happiest. There's a balance there, and it's one that he seems to have found by sharing the spotlight with the talented people around him. Aha! That's how you managed to infiltrate the CH party! Heh. I'm glad I met you that night.... I remember congratulating you on your M&G. spikesmom, I'll see you in Waukegan and Merrillville, so you'd better come up to me if you can find me and tell me who you are!!! WTLGD is originally a Faith Hill song, while Listen is from the movie version (only) of Dreamgirls, sung by Beyonce. And yes, I know 5 other people type faster than I do, I don't care -- I'm leaving my post as it is! ETA: Just downloaded some Scarlett clack from GMA last year. I didn't realize she was there! It some good stuff....I haven't watched it all yet, but he was so adorable that day.

    Top Chef

Jenna, I've seen reviews of that book, and thought I would like it. I'll have to make sure to add it to my reading list. I also totally agree about Alton's recipes -- he's WAY too scientific for actual cooking, IMO. However, my husband has had great success with his hints on making an omelet, I will now never cook a turkey without brining it first, and Alton's overnight oatmeal is outstanding (I made some of it last night/this morning). Maybe we should start a thread just for Food Network shows? *g*
  5. Back from our shopping trip. Did our usual at Sam's Club -- I swear I walk in there and spend at least $100.00 easily. The apple orchard was great too -- picked up a full peck of HoneyCrisp apples for my husband and I to take in our lunches. Man, those are good apples! Also bought cider....yum. But Circuit City was somewhat of a bust. We did get the second season of Lost on DVD cheap, but the iPod converter for the car that I really wanted wouldn't work with the new iPod nano. At this point, I think I'm going to do some more research, and then come up with the next step. (If anyone has any recommendations, let me know....) Crooner's Christmas at WalMart. That's for couchie... Now it's laundry time! That, and listening to BYLM....*g*
  6. Good morning FCA! :00003653: aikim! Hope you have a wonderful day, and a wonderful weekend with hubby! Also, happy birthday to Lucia -- a Brazilian Clay fan! Wow! I guess I need to start listening to my BYLMs....although I actually did work on that a bit earlier in the week. Not sure if I'll be finished by next Sunday, though.... Off to spend this beautiful fall day -- shopping! Sam's Club, the ultimate of consumerism. But we're also going to Circuit City (Lost season two on sale CHEAP, plus an FM receiver for my iPod) and an apple orchard. I used to not care for apples at all -- until I discovered that it was just I didn't like Red Delicious apples (I can go with "red" but "delicious"? Nuh huh). I like Jonagolds and Fuji's (the last thanks to Clay *g*).
  7. But which note are you talking about? The "OHHHHH" before the key change in the final chorus -- I totally agree with you. But then, in some performances, he'd do that high, falsetto "find" -- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. IMO, most times it did work -- I was just impressed as hell that he tried it! OK, officially -- we're finished. But if y'all want to keep agreeing *g*, more power to ya!
  8. Man, I have a hard, hard time analyzing Clay's voice. I mean, I know I love it -- but I think my listening along with him has his voice and performing style developed, I just can't separate it. It's always been him. I was listening to him sing from the first JNT show in 2004 today on the treadmill. Yep -- still Clay. Just younger. But still fantastic.
  9. Porn star?!?!?! Where's muski? OK, final question for the evening: How do you feel Clay's voice has evolved over the past 4 years?
  10. You know what they -- it's not the destination, it's the journey.
  11. I think your last statement answered your own question, at least in my book. I want for Clay what he wants in his heart. Oh sure, I may have some preferences (TV for me), but for the most part, I just want him to do whatever he thinks would keep him in the business and allow him to pursue his humaitarian work as well.
  12. CG, totally agree! And I think we can look no further than the career of either the Grateful Dead or Jimmy Buffett to back this theory. Yes, both artists have had radio hits and play (although in the Dead's case, they were then "selling out" with "Shades of Grey"), but for the most part, they made their bread and butter money by TOURING. I think Clay can do that as well.
  13. Wasn't that last night's conversation about "shipping"?
  14. I need say no more. I love KAndre, says everything succinctly!
  15. Sorry to cut this discussion short -- good job everyone! (I'm sure there's a few stragglers out there though....) QUESTION TWO: Should Clay be a "superstar?" A "pop star"? An "entertainer?" Or all of the above? Does he really have to choose?
  16. And see, this gets into the whole "information literacy" concept that I work with every day! The changes in technology came so fast, our ability to pick reliable sources got muddied. Librarians are having to deal with this every damn day. And also unfortunately, people don't seem to care about that all that much either. [/soap box] I'm going to let this topic go for 5 more minutes, and then next topic....
  17. I think the other thing to remember with this is that Clay's NOT the only celebrity out there. I think almost EVERY celebrity gets crap from the tabloids -- it's just we don't pay attention because it's not Clay. This is really one instance where we need to ignore, even if it is Clay. JMO.
  18. And I think related to that is "ignore the people that DO pay attention." Yes, it might mean ignoring your Mom, or brother, or friend, for a while, but hopefully, eventually, they'll get the hint. (I'm saying that from the perspective of someone who has only had to deal with this once, though....and one well placed "he said he isn't, and besides, what does that have to do with his singing?" stopped it cold.) I don't know, looks pretty popular around here to me.
  19. I honestly think the "unasked" question related to this question is "Should Clay fight the tabloid media?" I agree with everyone that he really should just ignore....but I get the feeling that some want him to be the "poster child" for taking on the media, in order to make that change in society. Society seems to love this kind of tabloid stuff, and I think that there are many of us that are sick of it. Question is, should Clay be the person leading the revolution? I don't think so, myself. I think it has to come from LOTS of people, starting with US. If we ignore, the ratings and sales go down (hopefully), and this stuff might go away.
  20. OK, here we go -- chat part two! QUESTION ONE: How does Clay combat the tabloid media?
  21. cha cha, I'm going to print this thread out and try it later this weekend!
  22. Chat starts at 9:00 EDT -- just over 20 minutes from now. It will last an hour, and the thread will start here (scroll down).
  23. I hope it's okay to post this on Couchie's behalf since she's not signed on: Send donations to aearlye@yahoo.com :F_05BL17blowkiss: Thank you for doing that canuck. I was at the reference desk here in the afternoon (even though I did sign on once....bad ldyj...), and as I was leaving work I discovered I had a voice mail on my cellphone from couchie. She's going through DT's at the moment, because her internet is down at work. So -- she'll be checking in after work this evening. Reminder: chat part two is this evening!
