  1. ....and Emma Bubel, and Nick and Deborah Leisey, and Jamie B...... So nice to "see" everyone there...and so many being added, you can hardly keep up to it! It's like trying to read Clay's blog comments I'm excited and a bit teary *sniff* Who is Deborah Leisey again? I was surprised with how happy I was to read this news today. I am waiting for career news along with everyone else but this really made me happy. I actually like the name alot-it spoke to me. "project" suggest action, better than my lame suggestion of "naitonal inclusion institute." I am also really impressed with all of the premier research partners that have hooked up with the foundation. They want to make sure their curriculums are effective. That is responsible stewardship to me. I am now a fan officially on facebook! ETA: Michael Orland is a fan too!
  2. liney, thank you for posting those blonde pics. Really, they are all terrific but the one with him from waist up with the sweater, so drool worthy, hunky. I listen to a philly npr station that plays alternative music. wxpn, they stream www.xpn.org and it is truly a terrific station. They are hugely into promoting singer/songwriters( I admit getting tired of that sometimes) and clay's music does not fit their genre. (An exception is their superb Sleepy Hollow segment every sunday morning (6 am to 11 am EST) where they play an ecelectic blend of movie music, standards, and contemporary "mood" music- "something about us" would fit well, possibly LAA). Anyhoo xpn is sponsoring their ten desert disc contest. They are asking listeners to submit songs that they, if they were stranded on an island, they would want to have with them. songs they will not tire of. I am really bad at figuring out personal lists. I know I want Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London on there and probably Respect by Aretha Franklin. And I need a Bonnie Raitt in there. But of course I must include a clay song. I am thinking I want a song that really showcases his amazing voice and many different aspects of it. I keep coming back to "Without You" and for a non-recorded song "Carolina In My Mind" or more recently the "Right Here Waiting" from the gala. I am curious about what people's choices might be for desert island discs, clay and non-clay selections.
  3. This was not as automatic a choice as yesterday's. (My choice was not the automatic winner but the winner was gooood!) Is there a place where we can see all the entries, even the losers for each day? I missed the beginning of the contest. Thanks for doing this, fun!
  4. Stealing the idea shamelessly from FCA we are going to have a listening party for ATDW on CV tomorrow evening. Something to do in this slow time. Here are the details: I so enjoyed our listening party here at FCA for OMWH. I am assuming you did one for ATDW here at FCA. I joined FCA in 2007 so I missed it if you did one. If you care to join us, I would love to see you. Luckiest, I am guessing we will here something on August 4th. What it will be about I have no idea.
  5. You should post this as a comment in Clay's blog. That quote makes for a great soundbite but people like that are darn hard to live and work with. I am in the car that I do not feel that Clay needed to apologize for the first blog but he shouldn't regret writing the second one either.
  6. I woke up this morning to see that Clay answered my question. A three word response but I let out a loud EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! in my living room! (If no one was there to hear it, did it really make a sound?) Can any one tell me approximately what page or time clay talked about kissing a smoker? I was out for the evening and missed quite a bit of the live action, but just loved what he did. Can't wait to go back and savor that long thread.
  7. A Touch of Class-was that with George Segal and Glenda Jackson? I loved that movie, haven't thought about it for years. I tend to like films that I discovered on my own. That thrill of discovery. Breaking Away, Blade Runner, Topsy Turvy, Go, Swingers, are just a few that I stumbled upon and really loved. Another film i still treasure is Crossing Delancy. And Strictly Ballroom. And Hannah and Her Sisters. I like talky films cause I am kinda talky. Oh, and Last Days of Disco, fantastic and very talky. I love opera. I grew up with it though and I think that makes a diffence. My mother played opera all the time at our house. I didn't like it as a child but in my twenties I grew to really enjoy it and love seeing them live, especially with my mom. I listen every Saturday on NPR when they broadcast live from the met. A terrific movie is Diva from the 80s. It is about a young man obsessed with an opera singer who will not allow her voice to be recorded. He brings recording equipment illegally to a concert (sounds familiar?) and mayhem ensues. it is really a good thriller. If you rent it, get it subtitled. After seeing it in the theatres i rented the dubbed version, really, really bad acting. There was the most beautiful aria in there from an opera called Martha, I believe. What I love best about opera are the harmonies.
  8. I hated Forrest Gump! I did not want to see Titanic because my great-uncle went down with her and when I was a kid I remember the family still talking about how sad it was. But the best part about that movie was when the ship hit the iceberg, a teenager behind me, in the theater, said really loud to her friend "Do you think it's going to sink"? We couldn't help but burst out laughing! Susan Boyle? Yes way too overexposed! The competition isn't even over yet. merrieee, now that bolded part just cracked me up! I never could understand the hoopla over Titanic. I saw it once because I needed to see what all the commotion was about. The scene in the ocean where so many drowned was very difficult to watch. I can imagine how my reaction would have magnified if I lost a relative in that disaster. Actually, although Leonard C was okay in the movie, i was not compelled to see him in anything else. But after seeing him in The Departed and another more recent film (directed by Ridley Scott, can't remember the name) my appreciation for him has grown by leaps and bounds. I think he is an amazing actor. And he scored points with me by approaching Clay at the AFI's way, way back when when Clay talked about knowing no one at the celebrity events. I think it was an AFI thing honoring DiNiro. It just seemed like a nice thing for Leonard C. to do. MaMia the movie. Too long and too loud. The first half was more entertaining than the second half for me. I first saw the play in Toronto. I was there for a conference during the height of the SARS epidemic and they had unexpected seats available. I was never an ABBA fan but love theatre. i was so impressed, loved the show, became a HUGE Abba fan. The cast was fantastic. Saw it again on Broadway a few years later because my neices husband's roommate from college had the role of the daughter's fiance. I really did not think the casting over all was as strong as the touring company. The actress who played the daughter just was not a good singer. And that part has some of the prettiest songs in the show. My nephew in law asked his friend about her and she was the regular. His friend said the sub was better. My nephew's friend was good and cute, the role is just not that big. He let us come on stage after the show let us. My broadway debut. Okay, i have a refrigerator and pantry that are just screaming for my attention. beryl I really enjoyed the sentiment you expressed here: Are you a relatively new fan?
  9. thanks, claytonic, I will give it a try. I do think it is browser related.
  10. Lots of interesting conversations, always is here at CF. Susan Boyle. I am a little like jamar here. I found myself losing interest and i hadn't even heard her yet. And when I finally went to check out the youtube, i can't access you tube for some reason now on my laptop. Something about my Javascript being turned off or not having the flash player. Up until two weeks ago, I have always been able to access youtubes, not sure what happened. If anyone has an idea, can you share what I might be able to do? I did manage to catch up with the video at work. Probably the tipping point is that a colleague told me she just sobbed when she heard her sing. As i can't imagine this person so emotional i had to check it out. My thoughts were good voice but I guess I am not surprised that someone who is older/ordinary looking/awkward would have a good voice. I think we have been so conditioned to need the whole package. To be fair, if I had been in the audience and not prepared for what I was about to hear I might have been blown away too. I wonder what a sociologist would say about the SB phenomenon. Is it that people like to root for the underdog? As some have suggested here, perhaps it is the depressed economy and the positive lift she has brought many. Still, she is everywhere as couchie noted. People want to see/know/hear more. I can't hear her "Cry Me a River" due to the puter issues talked about above. I also wonder if the judges are unaware of the talent that will be brought before them. I remember Simon saying about AI that he has pretty much made up his mind about what he is going to say when he hears them rehearse/dress rehearsal. The actual show is live, he wants to be prepared. Someones when there is a disconnect between what he says and the actual performance is that the live performance differs wildly (good or bad) from the dress rehearsal. I love the Kenneth Cole pictures. He looked so happy in alot of them-alot of pics available from that night-but he later said in a 2006 people article that he was terrified that night. Our bf can sure mask those emotions. Back then I had fantasies that Clay and yellow sweater girl were an item. Even in that pic up there, he is leaning into her. She seemed pretty, intelligent, cool, fun. Just the kind of special someone I wanted for Clay. Of course i knew nothing about her, just my own fantasies. I also remember a fan video of him on the Early Show and she was helping him prep. (She is/was an assistant producer for the show?) You could tell that she really enjoyed him, and he seemed very comfortable with her. merimeee, I was in London only twice for two glorious visits. I loved the pub fun. And I don't like my beer ice cold so I was very happy.
  11. Right now and I listening to Right Here Waiting from Golfing for Inclusion. I just love how Clay interprets this song in this performance and in the Gala. I always skip it when listening to ATDW but this live version is just so much better. i don't think it is just about being nearly acoustic. Is it in a different key? And now he is singing Mandy, a song that I hated when sung by Barry Manilow. i really love how Clay sings it. But he says the name differently now compared to JBT, "man-dee", much quicker on the first and second syllable. I have watched AI each season since AI2. I love discovering new voices that I enjoyed, including Lakisha, Chris D., Bo Bice to name a few, but nothing begins to approach the thrill of discovery of clay and that voice. I really dislike the bad auditions and the cruelty of the judges especially evident during that time. But I do find myself watching some of it for the diamonds in the rough that occassionally pop up. A music reality show I really enjoyed even more than AI was Rock Star. Just loved those two seasons! vjm and I actually went to see SuperNova Rock Star with was his name Lucas? it was one of the worst live shows I have ever seen but we (vjm and her lovely two sisters and I) had an absolute blast. Couchie awhile back you talked about Josh Hogue, I can't remember the context ot it. I actually saw him in concert about two years ago. He was the opening act for Elliot Yamin. Elliot was clearly the better singer, richer voice, but I was bored throughout.
  12. I just want to thank the banner makers. Loving this one as I think that HITs picture was partially responsible for me crossing over to the dark side way back when. He manages to look cute, handsome, with the hint of sexy in one picture. That and the Cosmo Girl pic. That one was just plain hot. I was away at a conference when the playlist was released. I am looking forward to hearing how the whole thing flows. I also want to hear if they do something with that chorus in BOTW. I really couldn't believe they released something that seemed so poorly produced at the time. Although some of the songs are some of my lesser favorites, they do offer a cross section of Clay and do help showcase some of the mellower songs. I actually would have preferred "Without You" instead of OMWH. I think WY really showcases the suppleness of Clay's voice, the tender and the power. I was only familiar with Harry Neilson (sp) version so it didn't seem like an overdone choice for me. I haven't bought it yet, but will. I watched Celebrity Apprentice. I was in this state of inertia, that is my only excuse. Just not that entertaining to me anymore.
  13. liney, although I THINK I've thought this all alone, I know this is the first time somebody's put it in words in a simple and thorough way that just.makes.sense! I agree with muskifest, very well put liney. I think that was what I was trying to get at the other day when I asked what people thought were Clay's musical influences Like duckyvee wrote, Clay just seems to like to sing And I think that's certainly true but as he has been engaged in the music business and exposed to different kinds of music and musicians, i think he is defining himself sonicallly. (I like that word too). I remember a print interview somewhere when he last did a GMA concert At that time he purportedly was working on a album of originals that eventually turned into ATDW. I got the impression from what he said that he was happy to sing pretty much any of the songs presented to him but that Jaymes cautioned him from just jumping at any song. I think he has grown since then and is committed to singing songs that are meaningful to him but also that he sounds good singing. This reminds me awhile back when people were talking about clay's possible future political aspirations. I wrote "I can see it now 'Ladies and gentleman, the 49th president of the United States and American Idol runner-up, Clay Aiken!" About New York, I saw Avenue Q and loved it. Not your mother's puppet show Another suggestion is the Blue Man Group. New York is one of the places they have a specially equipped theatre which is sort of interactive with the audience. I saw them in Chicago several years ago...an absolutely terrific show. Ah memories of the Mann stop of the SRHP tour. I just loved the whole puberty diologue, and the burp, followed by deep-voiced Clay saying "Now, I'm a man."
  14. This medley of the Four Tops songs reminds me of the amazing job Clay does on motown songs. Aw Sugar Pie Honey Bunch...wow, he was so great singing that too. I think I like Ne Yo and I still like Smokey's voice.
  15. I think I know why Clay has not made it to many awards shows. He is too tall. Man, most of those male singers are shrimp sized even in heels. Thank you, ncgurrl, finally someone figured why Clay hasn't been performing on these award shows! Did any one know that Paul had a song out? Did anyone hear it? I don't think his album got that great critical press or sold that many, but as calurker so astutely pointed out, there is all that thingy going on.
  16. Watching the grammies. I started a thread at CV in the Student Lounge but interested in your thoughts. So far, no water cooler moments for me. The venue looks huge and most groups sound like they are performing in an aircraft hanger. I am thriled that Allison Krauss and Robert Plant are getting recognized for their beautiful work. Might I hope they get Album of the Year. If anyone is curious about the song that won Record of the Year, here is a link: http://video.aol.com/video-detail/robert-p...etter/715626922 Paul looks amazing but didn't sound that robust.
  17. claytonic Did we talk about Sammy Davis Jr. before? I thought he had the most incredible voice. In college, my friends and I would sit in our dorm rooms listening to our favorite album of his. His voice was absolutley my favorite from the rat pack group. I posted the following on CV and got one response (and a very good one at that). But I would like to hear some of your thoughts on this. It has to do with Clay's musical influences.
  18. Couchie, I can only imagine your relief in seeing the mom you know return. Real life has been beyond hectic since attending Spamalot but I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting fellow clay fans and posters at FCA. I apologize if I leave anyone out, but it was such a treat to hang out with couchie, annabear, justclay, playbiller, jamar, dolcepinza, cha cha trusty, duckyvee, jamar, itsteri, and saltie. I know there were others but I cannot remember your names. I am very excited about the Clay events happening this week and next. Can't wait for the first hand accounts from tomorrow. I cannot imagine attending the concert without staring at Clay the entire time, despite my best efforts. I wonder if he will sit at the back of the box which will make watching him and the concert challenging. And can't wait for our golfers to report about the GFI and the miniconcert. What songs will he sing? Who will accompany him? Can't wait. I absolutley love the pic of Clay and Ruben. I read someone describe Clay as "dashing," I think on CH, in that pic. I have to agree that was my first impression in seeing him in that pic. Love, love the sweater-I like his hair too. And, if this makes any sense, Ruben (who looks great too) doesn't dwarf Clay as he did five years ago in the pics. Clay's physical presence is strong, confident. I have the day off, sort of . Classes are not in session but I have lots of job related work to accomplish. Have a great day everone.
  19. I have been in the education business in one shape or other for thirty years. I have seen the growth and development of multicultural education programs and one of the things that has always confounded me about this area of study is that it requires at some level to learn generalizations about groups so that interactions are culturally sensitive. But by painting with a broad brush, we are in danger of over generalizing. I think what I have learned from these studies is to be aware that culture may impact impressions and behaviors. That has been helpful for me.
  20. And that's a very good point to remember. Thank you. I agree with this too. clayzycoffin I bet the song was "I Will Carry the You." I was shopping in the Sears' appliance section a few years ago and I heard IWCY over the loudspeaker. I actually drifted away from the salesperson as he was introducing the various dishwashers so I could get a better listen. I could tell from the look on his face that he wondered what was going on as my face was tilted towards the ceiling (source of the music) with a smile on my face that he probably rarely sees as he describes the attributes of appliances. About the whole Flock of Seagulls thing. First of all, love all the pics that have surfaced. What struck me about this when Clay first talked about this on Kimmel is that he got the Spamalot co-workers to go along with this idea. This spoke loudly to me about his leadership skills and the acceptance by his peers. That made me all schmoopie. And he made a point to Kimmel that not only the girls got dressed up but the guys did too. And here is the fun evidence.
  21. Shucks Cagney1950, I didn't mean to interrupt you so rudely, I was well intentioned and if I'd known who you were, I would have remained silent. Thanks, though, for not slapping the side of my head, ouch that would have hurt! Hey I didn't know there was a clay fan in the audience! After roughin' you up a bit, I would have said hey!
  22. The discussion about grammar is cracking me up. Funny, when I read Ruben's quote, I recognized the mistake in grammar but I too make that same mistake when speaking. I don't make it in writing, or at least I usually catch it when I proofread. I was at a conference last month when after waiting for 15 minutes for the speaker to show up and no one in the room doing anything I went in search of the conference organizers. They confirmed that they couldn't find the speaker either and they asked me to go back to the hall and provide options for the attendees. As I was doing this I made the same error that Ruben did and an attendee (who I didn't know) interrupted my instructions to correct my grammar. I wanted to slap her up side her head.
  23. couchie, so glad your mother is doing better. take care of yourself. I still check in with the obama montage, from time to time. I was thrilled that it is approaching the 600,000 views. a few minutes ago it was 599, 219. Here is a nice post from a few hours ago from someone who appears to be a nju (based on his/her favorite videos) ETA: While others focus on the bow tie, I am examining the shirt. i don't detect a t shirt under there.
  24. I now understand the context for what you were saying liney. I appreciate your repy.
