  1. Hi, y'all! Just want to mention that I got that f**king "Antivirus Soft" trojan yesterday - fake security pop-ups, porn sites everywhere, but the worst was it would not let me open any applications - not even notepad, much less Task Manager. Could use the internet a little bit. Had to go into safe mode to install AVG (note - daintily hitting F8 once to get into safe mode does not work very well - one must hit F8 like their life depends on how many times it is done) Anyway, if this happens to anyone else - the way I fixed it was to restore back to about 5 days ago. You don't lose files, but you do lose some installed programs. Don't get snookered into paying $50 for them to delete the virus. This virus does not actually harm any files, just messes up access to them. Seems to be spreading around the net now, just a heads up.
  2. Chief enabler here - Season 2 of True Blood is out now. ;-) My local video rental store is going out of business - got some xbox 360 games for $7 each. Looked at the TV DVDs, 3 for $10! But everything is extremely picked over. Parts of the Riches were missing, and no True Blood. Still love Big Bang Theory, Old Christine, 30 Rock. Office is finally growing on me, I preferred the BBC version for so long. Community, Modern Family, Middle - all really really good! Chopped is good, I like International House Hunters, interesting to see real estate in other lands. Kinda lost interest in Project Runway, but I am sure I will be back watching Top Chef, right up until it pisses me off. As usual. Love NCIS now, and CSI Miami - but have watched so much as syndicated shows that I have no sense of a story line. Love Burn Notice. Am trying really hard to not get hooked on anything serious. Still love Jimmy Kimmel. In all the bizarre and unsettling house-moving I have been doing lately, I managed to score a 32" LG TV with Very High Picture Sharpness Numbers - as a techie, when I was asked for advice, I just pointed out the TV with the highest numbers, turns out to have been a good move. Those numbers mean squat to me except the HD stuff is amazing - too amazing, really, for some shows, I did not want to see all the makeup and stuff. It is funny to see the quality of cosmetic coverage varies so much - network dramas - awesome, HGTV peeps - what were they thinking. Stuff like Blue Planet is fabulous. Some shows look like 3D. The TV was purchased by someone else as an inducement for people to buy her house, to be installed over the fireplace; plans changed, and I managed to snag the TV. Yay! because my old picture tube thingy was missing the top 1/5 rows of lines. And I have been fairly pleasant about all the moving.
  3. Thank you to all who are sharing recaps!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. Canfly - bwahahahahahaha! Thank you! Now I'm off to Canada, to buy some of that fountain of youth stuff - I seriously really need it!!!!!!! Couchie, Lopez made Clay-gay jokes in his TV routines, but for some reason, continued taking shots at him during interviews. Really really weird.
  5. I can't get past the pedophile jokes. I won't even try. I don't think everybody was doing that. I am sure Conan will do just fine without me as a fan or even as a casual viewer, though.
  6. cindilu2, if you mean Ron the God of Irony - he has been busy doing kettlebell interval training, and has ordered a LOT of EZ-Fling spears - new CD coming soon, and he is determined to let no hypocrite go unskewered. I found him in a sake bar in Tokyo; he was out of shape and down in spirit, but the thought of perforating some deserving folks cheered him up. Yeah, he'll get tired of it after a week or so, and beg for helpers, but we'll deal with that later. He is gonna hurl that kettlebell, too, if he feels the situation warrants it. If you were not asking about him, well, he wanted me to get the information out there, anyway.
  7. Works for me - I am very very happy that District 9 was nominated!!!!!!! It is my personal best picture of the year. I am looking forward to seeing the people who made the film; I have no illusions that they will win. The picture cost $30 million to make, and has earned about $205 million so far - heeeee......less than Avatar's budget. I loved Avatar's look and sound - but don't care to hear the dialog ever again. I think when Clay says Twitter is the devil, he really means the idiot twitterers who broadcast his whereabouts or participation in something - whether true or not.
  8. Hmmmmm....watching The Wire must be like reading a John LeCarre spy story - miss one sentence, and you are totally flummoxed three chapters later. I want to like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - I was born there - and the cast is stellar, but I guess I will have to start from the very beginning. Thanks for all of those links! I remember the Simpsons from when it was a bit on the Tracy Ullman show - it sure had legs. Oh, and I did get MagicJack. It works perfectly. Amazing!
  9. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. it happens when I click on view new posts or when I just click on a thread - I get a "tree" of posts, I have to click on each one to read it. ugh.
  11. I am getting a list of "posts in this topic" instead of actual posts - wrings hands - what have I done wrong??????
  12. I watched part of that, and I quite agree with you.....I felt uncomfortable, but - it sucked. And Robin Williams used to make me weep with laughter.
  13. I am really enjoying this....everyone looks hammered, Ricky Gervais is being brutally funny, and there are a few surprising winners. and, well, Stephen Moyer is hot. Robert Downey Jr. was perfect, I love Scorsese for The Last Waltz, I am happy he won something, the German guy from Ingourious Basterds was so sweet, Mo'nique was awesome in her winning speech, she made me cry....a fun night! Jeff Bridges is turning into Kris Kristofferson. Mickey Rourke looks like he is made of vinyl. The Hangover guys are still incredulous. Tina Fey did too expect to win - and I lurve her and her show bestest anyway. I think Julia Roberts is drunk. Heee....she turned down Blind Side, Sandra Bullock took it and won a Golden Globe. Cheers. Lessee, DeCaprio is not an attractive man (IMO), Jody Foster looked fabulous, Jennifer Aniston looked petulant, and this is the first time I have ever watched an awards show in HD (courtesy a good friend and some house-swapping) - verrrry interesting. Toni Collette won a Globe - I have lurved her ever since Muriel's Wedding. And Yay! for Avatar! And for the three people who will read this thread - I bought a magicjack and it does install itself in three minutes and so far it works perfectly. Way cool.
  14. How about Hello Stranger - Barbara Lewis? Hurt - Timi Yuro Don't You Know - Della Reese Broken Hearted Melody - sarah vaughan It's just a matter of time - brook benton at last - etta james what a difference a day makes - dinah washington Most of the Platters stand by me - ben e king I LOVE Since I Fell for You, but, um, don't see anyone improving on that. And add The Three Bells to the oh please no list Also The Old Lamplighter.
  15. In the interests of pure research....... Elvis before he found Clairol Clay content - Looking forward to Mack the Knife a LOT - and wish he would throw in Somewhere Beyond the Sea.
  16. Usually there is a DVD as part of the fundraising - dunno if those are available elsewhere!
  17. That classy classy Conan says that part of his low ratings is due to not having a good lead-in audience from NBC prime time shows - which would of course be Leno. No, Conan, that's not it.
  18. Claylove - yeah, I don't think there is anywhere near the frenzy for Kris Allen that Clay and Ruben got, but IIRC, Clay and Ruben did play a few conventions and weddings and such - those things are usually not public, but we seemed to find out about some of them. I think Clay (and Ruben?) sang at a Ford stockholder meeting, and I think there was a gig in Japan or Australia? Anyway, I think most singers can be booked - the price prolly varies widely, but if you can spend a million dollars or LOTS more, you can have almost anyone you want to sing at a function. Here is an article from last August: And here is an agency who seems to represent lots of famous singers: delafont music acts Check out their rosters - yikes!!!!!! Looks like you could even get Clay to sing for you!!!!! I think this is a clearinghouse.
  19. Yup. Here in sunny Florida, two power outages so far tonight - and I am in someone else's house, no candles or matches. First thing tomorrow - buy candles and matches. Got wine, two flashlights, and some books though - it's not all good, but it's been lots worse!!! Luckily, I do not like a warm house. One time in October, in Tokyo, I could not get the air conditioning in my hotel room to work.....due to Japanese dislike of just saying no, no air conditioning from October until spring, an hour was wasted with four different guys showing up and fiddling with the thermostat and saying hmmmmm, not working, hmmmmmm, then the manager came up and fessed up to the no cold air for you! situation. I asked for a room with a window I could open, causing great consternation, but I prevailed, and got lovely cold air. That air smelled like a KFC parking lot, but it was cold. Lovely hotel, Dai Ichi, they could well afford to air condition all year 'round - but then in winter all my Japanese friends would sit around a low table with a fricking heater going full blast, underneath, roasting toes. Really, that would be a version of hell for me, but the other problem was getting up from sitting on the floor for an hour. My knees locked up, and I briefly considered faking a faint so as not to resemble an arthritic camel getting up. If you ever saw a camel get up, you know what I mean. Looks like an explosion in a knee factory, with lots of grunting. Heeee....later that night, at the hotel, I called the front desk and asked for a corkscrew and two dozen more hangers (I was going to be there for two months) and evidently they were worried I would get drunk and fall out of the window or else abscond with the hangers, so they made me pay my bill weekly. Just rambling, waiting for the power to go out again!
  20. Luckiest, the floaters are droplets of blood, ordinarily they eventually get absorbed - but if you don't also have flashers (the retinal lining is torn or whatever, and light is striking parts of the eyeball that are not processing it, I think) then maybe the floaters are another problem. I know a woman with diabetes who has floaters because her capillaries are weakened. My floaters were so dramatically bad that when I looked down at my swimming pool, I thought the entire water surface was covered with soot - it took a little bit for me to realise the soot was in my eyes! Congrats on the job!
  21. liney, I had a detached retina and they tacked it back in place with a laser - yeah, hardest part is keeping still, but then I seemed to be able to concentrate on that perfectly once I understood what the doctor was doing. Plus a nurse kept her hand on my head, pushing me into the face thingy. Did not hurt, just very odd. Best wishes are beaming your way! For everyone, if you experience "flashers and floaters" - seems like camera flashes going off just outside your field of vision, and little dotlets floating around in your eye, get thee to an eye clinic ASAP. They can do wonders these days!!!
  22. FIOS is the Verizon fiber-optic network, I have TV, internet, phone. I have had only one two-minute outage in two years. It is faster because with fiber-optic, the bandwidth is so great that things do not need to be compressed to go into a cable and decompressed at your house, like cable does. I had DSL before, which is Verizon's "cable" - and FIOS is waaaaaaay better. The internet speed is wonderful, but their techies were no help in getting it fine-tuned. A guy I worked with helped me with that, though. Anyway, it is faster and more clear, and even something silly - FIOS has its channels in like groupings, DishTV has channels all over the f**king place and in no particular order, shopping networks mixed in with other stuff. Right now, even changing channels is a PIA to this channel-surfer, because of the lag time. Soon I am going to cancel the phone part and get a MagicJack. Bill grows on ya. And he and Anna Pacquin are engaged, in real life, so he grew on her, too!
