“Wheel LIVE”: Buy a Ticket, Buy a Vowel

“Wheel LIVE”: Buy a Ticket, Buy a Vowel

October 16, 2022 By Jackson Murphy

I’ve had the pleasure of attending two tapings of “Wheel of Fortune”. The first was August 2009 during my first visit to Hollywood. I met the show’s announcer, Charlie O’Donnell. He was kind to me, and I was sad to learn of his passing a little over a year later.

The second “Wheel” taping was in January 2020 — about seven or eight weeks before the entertainment world shut down because of COVID. Pat Sajak had recently returned following his emergency surgery. Vanna White talked with the audience about her experience guest hosting.

“Wheel” is an exciting show to watch in person: the lights, the cameras, the contestants, the icons, the puzzle board and, of course, the wheel. But not everyone gets the chance to go to Sony Pictures Studios. So why not have “America’s Game” come to you?

“The Price Is Right LIVE” has been a national, touring success for two decades. It’s “Wheel”’s turn (at the wheel) to enjoy the cross-country fun. “Wheel of Fortune LIVE” recently came to my neck of the woods in Albany NY, featuring host Clay Aiken and co-host Kalpana Pot.

Growing up, I watched Aiken on a couple reality competition shows. Clearly at least one other person did the same. The moment Aiken appeared centerstage, she shouted from one of the first couple rows, “You’re MY American Idol!”

That audience member was in a good mood, and so was pretty much everyone else there — anxious to watch the gameplay and root for the contestants. (And for a few people, maybe a little too anxious to shout-out letters or the answers to puzzles, even after our announcer, Dave Styles, asked us all to take an oath. Security is there and ready to kick people out.)

It was a wild night, full of fun, unpredictable and truly captivating moments. Everyone who’s there gets a different color wristband. I was part of the yellow crew. We won a prize thanks to an audience game in between the ones in stage. It’s a commemorative “Wheel LIVE” keychain.

If you pay a certain amount of money and purchase a specific level-ticket, you have the opportunity to be one of the nine contestants called on stage to play.

I’ve been an avid Wheel Watcher for most of my life. I knew many, but not all, of the puzzles before the contestants did. Certainly did not get the Bonus Round solution before Robert, a firefighter from Altamont, solved it. It was a thrilling he moment. He won $1,500, plus $500 for making it to the end. Afterwards, a very humbled Robert told me it was MUCH different being on stage vs. the audience or at home. One of his competitors won a trip to Hawaii earlier in the evening. Incredible.

It was Aiken’s third night hosting. (Mark L. Walberg, of “Antiques Roadshow” and “Temptation Island”, was emcee in a couple dozen cities earlier on in the tour, and he’ll be back for a few more near the end of the year.) Aiken was jolly, cracking one-liners, like when the Dinner & A Movie prize came-up on the wheel: “We pick the movie. It’s ‘From Justin to Kelly’”.

He applauded the focus and dedication of the Albany contestants. As for what happened the night before, he joked, “Let’s leave that crap in Syracuse.” Aiken also hated when an audience member would try to mess up a contestant’s chances of winning. At one point he threatened that if someone shouted-out an answer, “I will come down there and beat your ass!” Now that’s something you won’t hear Sajak say on TV!

There are still plenty of stops on the “Wheel of Fortune LIVE” train now through December 10th, including Cincinnati, Detroit, Seattle, Reno, Kansas City, Denver, Omaha, Milwaukee and Des Moines. Visit wheeloffortunelive.com for complete ticket info.

Clay Aiken

Clay Aiken wasn’t overly sold when he was approached to host the “Wheel of Fortune Live” tour.

“I wasn’t skeptical, I’d say,” Aiken explains.

“‘Wheel of Fortune’ is legendary and there’s no game show that’s more popular in the America, etc. How to make it work live was something I was very curious about and — holy crap — it does work. It really does.”

The tour comes to The Linda Ronstadt Music Hall, formerly the Tucson Music Hall, on Thursday, November 3, and Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino on Friday, November 4, and Saturday, November 5, with Aiken as host.

During “Wheel of Fortune Live,” guests can audition to go on stage and feel like they stepped into the game show. Randomly selected players will have the chance to spin a replica of the iconic wheel and solve the puzzles to win prizes, including up to $10,000 in cash and trips to the likes of Paris and Hawaii at every show. Additionally, hundreds of audience members can win cash and prizes.

“It’s so fun,” he said. “Audiences lose their absolute minds. I’ve been on tour 11 times on my own with my own shows. In all the years I’ve been touring, I wish I had audiences who were that fun, but I’m not giving away trips to Paris at my concerts. They have a reason to be more excited about ‘Wheel of Fortune.’ It’s really fun to watch.”

Aiken recently starred on Broadway, alongside Ruben Studdard, in “Ruben & Clay’s First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show” at the Imperial Theater.

This came 10 years after Aiken’s Broadway debut in Monty Python’s “Spamalot.” On the heels of “American Idol,” he became the first artist to have his first single debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

His subsequent album, “Measure of a Man,” also debuted at No. 1 with the highest first week sales by a debut artist. His 2004 holiday release, “Merry Christmas with Love,” set a record for the fastest-selling holiday album of the SoundScan era and remains tied for the highest charting debut of a holiday album.

The father to son Parker, Aiken served nine years as a UNICEF ambassador and in 2003, he co-founded, with Diane Bubel, what is now the National Inclusion Project to advocate and increase opportunities for children with disabilities to be included in extracurricular activities (such as summer camps and after-school programs) with their nondisabled peers.

Aiken is looking forward to bringing “Wheel of Fortune” back to Arizona.

“Everyone in America is a fan of ‘Wheel of Fortune,’” he said. “It’s been on for 40 years. Even if you’re not a nightly viewer, you’ve seen clips on YouTube. Holy crap. It’s the game that more people play in their living room than anything else.”

Clay Aiken to host ‘Wheel of Fortune’ live at Hancher

Clay Aiken to host ‘Wheel of Fortune’ live at Hancher

On Oct. 26, former ‘American Idol’ star and political figure Clay Aiken will return to Iowa City to host ‘Wheel of Fortune Live!’ at Hancher Auditorium.

Parker Jones, Arts Editor
October 25, 2022

Spinning the wheel, answering puzzles, and winning cash — the classic game show “Wheel of Fortune” will energize Hancher Auditorium audience members Wednesday night.

Currently on a tour around the country, the live edition of the game show is hosted by TV personality Mark L. Walberg and former American Idol participant Clay Aiken. However, Aiken will host Hancher’s edition of Wheel of Fortune.

Aiken won second place on American Idol in 2003, with his debut album going multi-platinum shortly afterward. Now, he is a Democratic political candidate and activist in his home state of North Carolina. His last visit to Iowa City was in 2017 to host an episode of ABC’s “The View” at West High School.

“The college towns are the best ones actually, because the college student audiences are by far the best audience,” Aiken said in an interview with The Daily Iowan. “It’s just very interactive … I love the small college town vibe, anywhere we go.”

Audience members will be randomly selected to spin the wheel, but attendees can purchase “VIP” tickets to have an increased chance, as well as unique activities before the show. Aiken said his favorite part of hosting “Wheel of Fortune Live!” is giving away the money and prizes, which can be up to 10 times the amount that a participant originally paid for a ticket.

“Honestly in all the things that I have done in the last 20 years, I would say this is the one that is the most fun and interesting and exciting,” Aiken said. “I’m giving people money every night in some way; Giving people money, giving people prizes, giving people trips to places, and I don’t have any risk of losing this, which is nice.”

At one of the event’s recent stops on tour in Rosemont, Illinois, Aiken gave away $2,500 and a trip to Paris to winners of the various puzzle games.

The event was not organized by Hancher staff but through a “rental” event put together by an outside promoter.

In an email to the DI, Communications Director for the Office of Performing Arts and Engagement Rob Cline wrote he is looking forward to welcoming an excited crowd for “Wheel of Fortune Live!” at Hancher.

“Working with outside promoters — as we’re doing in this case — allows us to broaden the kinds of performances and events that appear on the Hancher stage,” Cline wrote.

How to win big with local Clay Aiken-hosted ‘Wheel of Fortune’ live shows – Press Enterprise

 by

If you’ve ever watched “Wheel of Fortune” and screamed at the television because you thought you could do better, now’s your chance to prove it.

“Wheel of Fortune LIVE!” will present a series of shows with singer Clay Aiken Sunday, Nov. 6 at Harrah’s Southern California in Valley Center and Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks.

Aiken said he never thought he’d host the show, he’s been a fan his whole life.

“I feel like it’s the one show that everybody knows in some way and that’s widely known,” Aiken said in a phone interview. “I have heard of people watching it with their children, parents, grandparents or grandchildren. It’s one of the few things that families still do together.”

Aiken said this is the only time the game show has been on the road for live tapings. The live show looks identical to the studio version, consisting of the same sign and iconic wheel, but has different people on stage. The production team for the live show draws nine names each night for the three preliminary rounds. Later, each winner of the preliminary round returns for the final championship round.

WHEEL OF FORTUNE LIVE! Turning 40 Years Of Intimate Fandom into an Experience #WheelofFortune

WHEEL OF FORTUNE LIVE! Turning 40 Years Of Intimate Fandom into an Experience #WheelofFortune

From our parents to their parents, and maybe to our couch-comfy selves, the ritual of gathering around the living room TV every evening and playing along to Wheel Of Fortune’s theatrical game of hangman has been more than just our entertainment. It’s been a fandom. Sweaters, board games, mobile phone apps, truly “America’s Game” has become a celebrated institution over its 40 years on television. Recently we caught a Wheel Of Fortune Live stop at the gorgeous Kauffman Center in Kansas City.

Having seen the television production, it’s not hard to imagine only scaling a few elements to bring Wheel Of Fortune to a live amphitheater stage, but to my surprise, there’s such an energy to being in the crowd here that’s different from being at the Sony studio in Culver City. While the live tour does not have the iconic duo of Pat Sayjack and Vanna White, here the pair of co-hosts Clay Aiken and Kalpana Pot bring an energy suited to a live night-out crowd looking for a good time. Aiken delivered on playing off the crowd whimsically. The format of randomly selecting contestants to be on stage could have been disastrous since there were no producers to pre-interview contestants but it’s clear Wheel Live chose the best host. He brought out the personality of the housewives, business owners, and white-collar ordinary people of the midwest as he also brings the energy in from the audience afar. As these contestants let their guards down we got to see some real joy and a little bit of pain on the nerves of their faces every time that wheel clunked on a bankrupt wedge.

If you’re going to do Wheel, you have to bring fabulous prizes. Wheel Of Fortune LIVE did not skim in that department. People won things as simple as show merch, to gift cards, but a lucky one took home a trip to NYC and nearly another one to Vegas. Even a member of the audience not on stage took home their own top cash prize when the mini tournament winner on stage solved the bonus round puzzle.

There’s a moment of intimidation as you truly sink in making a move from armchair quarterback puzzles to putting yourself in the thick of it. For those willing to put themselves out there, one of the funniest nights out Wheel fans can have is checking out Wheel Of Fortune LIVE. The tour has only a few more stops in December and if you want to see if it’s coming to a city near you check out the show’s site here.

Clay Aiken & Ruben Studdard Are Going on Tour Together in 2023: Here Are the Dates

The trek comes in celebration of the pair's 20 year anniversary of competing on American Idol season 2.

Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard are taking their friendship — which began on American Idol season two — on the road. On Monday (Dec. 12), the duo announced that they will be teaming up in 2023 for a joint tour — Twenty The Tour — across the United States and Canada.

“@clayaiken & I are hitting the road this Spring, twenty years after our debuts on American Idol. Join us for the first leg of Twenty | The Tour,” Studdard shared on Instagram, along with the official tour poster and dates for the first leg of the trek.

Twenty The tour will make stops in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta and more, beginning on April 12 in Troy, N.Y., and concluding on May 16 in Wausau, Wis. Tickets for the tour are available for purchase through the tour’s official website, rubenandclay.com.

The pair chatted about their joint tour in a Monday appearance on The View after a jubilant performance of Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas.”

“We were here five years ago to announce our Broadway Christmas special, which was exciting for us. We’re getting old, Ruben, we are about to celebrate our 20th anniversary from the year we were on Idol, and so Ruben and I are are hitting the road together with a 20th anniversary tour all across the country through the year,” Aiken told The View‘s hosts. “We’re starting out this spring and we’re going to be celebrating the last 20 years since we did Idol and the music we’ve gotten to make and the friendships we made along the way.”

During the pair’s appearance on The View, they also revealed that they will be returning to American Idol in the upcoming season for the finale, as the finale date will coincide with their season two finale episode’s.

The second season of American Idol aired from January to May of 2003. Studdard faced off against Aiken in the finals, and ultimately won. Following the show, the pair remained close, which Aiken discussed in a Dec. 3 Instagram post.

“We don’t get to choose our family. Most family is predetermined by blood; some are predestined by God to come into our lives. I’ve got one brother who was born into my family and one brother who the good Lord introduced me to in 2003,” he wrote.

The “Invisible” singer continued, “A lot gets written and said about ‘how sweet it is’ that Rᴜʙᴇɴ and I have ‘kept in touch’ over the years. If you have the blessing of knowing Ruben Studdard, you understand: There aren’t many humans more selfless or gracious or loyal than he. America fell in love with him because his performances made them feel happy and welcomed; that’s who he is in real life too.”

See the full list of dates and Studdard’s announcement via Instagram below. Check out Aiken and Studdard’s appearance on The View in the video above.
