Wow. Just wow. Those pictures, and the story, are amazing. Thank you jmh for helping me remember our heroes for that day...

And now, for something completely different...

Yesterday's photo tourney battle was not a particularly close battle. Thank goodness, as I'm not fond of the coin tosses! Here's the winner...

...and here's today's tourney poll. Please vote at the top of that page!

What a fantastic story and what amazing pictures. There are no words to describe what a terrible tragedy this was. So many lives destroyed and so much bravery. I believe that some survivors and firemen etc. are having health problems now because of all the toxic dust they inhaled. It never ends does it!

I know that there is much to be thankful for, especially while recalling yesterday's 9/11 anniversary, but I just wanted to gripe about work a bit since I'm on call this week but I have a huge backlog of chores, and had to do that late night server upgrade in the middle of the week. Started that late because apparently people in Halifax fly helicopters until 9pm in the summer and I couldn't switch off the flight system until then. Why people won't get to bed at 11pm their time to sleep or not, so that regular people can get their work done is beyond me. And just now I got a page on a report that wouldn't run -- it's Saturday, why didn't they run it yesterday?!!!

Sorry about the hassle it took for you to do your job. Your job sounds really interesting though. I always consider you a techie, but I did not know it had to do with helicopters. What exactly do you do, if you do not mind my asking?

Hi Alicia! I only just moved to this group in February and my work isn't as technical as it used to be. This week was an exception since the people who regularly do the servers are away in Australia & Papua New Guinea, so I had to do it myself and I didn't want to push it back since I'll be traveling myself soon, though nowhere near as exotic as the others. My group implements the Logistics systems that keep track of people traveling to our production sites via helicopter, fixed wing (small planes), train & crewboats. It's fun to ride helicopters that land in tiny squares in the middle of the ocean and it's cool to visit the control rooms that do flight-following (tracking the flights via a GPS system). The helicopter company we work with also does Antarctica runs for the NSF and so they have a lot of great pictures of helicopters near glaciers with penguins in the foreground. In the summer, though, places like St. John's, Halifax and parts of Alaska try to get as much work as possible done during the daylight hours so our maintenance windows are much narrower and it's somewhat frustrating to work outside of their work schedules.

ETA: I know that jobs are scarce at present and I'd complain more if this one went away, plus I can't really blame people at our Founders Square office because they're also just trying to get their work done and they're actually very nice... but I just wanted to vent a little. I probably should just go get some air and work on some of those chores... thanks goodness I don't need to work on the report -- one of our contractors answered the ticket before I could get to it --- hee, sometimes stopping to complain can be a good thing!

WOW! I don't know about landing in tiny squares in the middle of the ocean. Exciting, but scary to me. Complaining is almost always a good thing if the complaint is legitimate. Glad it went your way this time!

BTW, I work closely with our Safety groups and I seem to remember how last year you were rather concerned about your means to evacuate if the need arises during a hurricane. Have things improved by now? It's the height of the season so I hope you have made contacts and/or arrangements since then. We were worried about you and were watching for you to call in after Ike.

Yesterday I posted a short remembrance blog about 9-11 that opens with Yollie950's "Grace of God" montage. I never made it to FCA, but since reading about the late Bill Biggart, jmh, I have added a couple of paragraphs, links, and his opening photo from "The Final Horror." Thank you, jmh, for sharing this amazing story, which is now part of the Carolina entry.

If you drop by the blog, I hope you will share your recollections and experiences from that day. Most of us have vivid memories from 9-11, even if we just casually watching the TODAY Show that morning.

Hope all is well with you folks. I see you have been very busy, Scarlett. :)

RE Tweeterwall and the Internet in general, I think we have to be alert for possible spyware/adware/virus invasions at all times. As others have said, I haven't seen the Tweeterwall problem since last week. Perhaps the site took care of it. Even so, click on the RED X and not CANCEL or in inside the small box if it appears. I added the link below.

Have a wonderful weekend! :BlowKiss:

I'll plan to fly back on Friday night, head to your place Saturday and fly out again on Sunday. This way I'll quadruple the eqm's since I'm doubling the trips and Continental has the double qualifying miles promo (thanks for that info, PerusingOne!)

I haven't really has time to post much. I've quickly skimmed most of the last 10 pages I think over the past week. I've been mega-busy and stressed with back-to-school and worrying about my stubborn cohort with the ruptured appendix. Still very worried.

I'm going to post the voting link for Twitterwall, for those who would like to vote for Clay but might not have it handy.

Ultimate World Idol voting

....and here's something fun to have a look at!

Flash mob in Chicago

What's that dance that everybody in NYC seems to know that I don't, lol?

I'm going to post the voting link for Twitterwall, for those who would like to vote for Clay but might not have it handy.

Please when you post this link will you post a simple warning within your post for those who may not be aware of a possible problem, and instructions on what to do should a problem arise.

Sorry, I wouldn't know what the problem is as I've never seen one...and I think you just did.

:)

Tons people have been to the Twitterwall site and I don't know of anybody else who's had a problem. Are you sure it was the Twitterwall site that caused the problem? I've had it open whenever I'm home not too busy and have voted on and off for several days with no issue. I'm not obsessed with Clay winning or anything but at the same time Clay is so close behind Adam at this point, I'd hate to see Clay not win because of people avoiding the site due to fear of something was been picked up elsewhere. Maybe you've already answered this but I was pretty time strapped and stressed to the max earlier when I saw the reference and I forget what your answer was if you did answer.

I know I get pop-ups from time to time with a false message about a virus. it's easy to tell it's fake because it's not from my spyware/anti-virus program. If you do get such a message, close the window out if you can and if you can't, don't click anything within the pop-up box, even if it says cancel. To be totally safe, do ctrl, alt, delete and then "end task" and you won't risk clicking something that you shouldn't.

You will NOT get a virus by clicking on the plus sign to vote for Clay.

Current totals.

Ellen Degeneres is joining AI as a new judge:

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20303396,00.html

I saw that. Weird. She was hilarious on SYTYCD but tended to "take over" the show. She's going to totally change the flavor of the show. AI choosing to not just go with Simon, Paula and Kara, shows that they realize that there is no chemistry there.

I hope his blog gets him some more nominations...

From the CH:

From butterflyshine:

Okay twitter fans, I have exciting news for you.

twitter.com/Clayaiken is Clay's official twitter page. Mangement is currently using it to give updates and is working on getting it verified...so if you are following that account you are following Clay's official twitter page.

Per OFC Admin who checked with managment.

Does this mean I have to sign up for the devil now? :cryingwlaughter:

Yes. I did it. It didn't hurt.

What IS annoying me though, is I keep getting emails telling me that these people that I don't know are now following me on Twitter. I signed up there as canfly172, so I'm assuming that they are clayfans but it's kinda weird cuz I have no idea who they are. I sometimes have people asking to be my friend on facebook that I don't know either. I know that they see the little flying :canfly: on my profile when they are looking at other clayfans facebook pages.

Besides, it might be fun to keep the Twits corraled in one place.

There's some twits I'd like to corral! Oh I was thinking of another kind of Twit! :cryingwlaughter:

:hysterical: I saw something about Twits the other day and I'm pretty sure that I was thinking the same that you were, lol.

He's following one twitterer. Guess who???

The NY Times. :cryingwlaughter:

I guess it's him then huh? :hysterical:

It looks as if he's got his Facebook page and Twitter account linked, which is a good thing. Update one, the other gets updated at the same time. Good for him!

I have a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't Clay's idea, lol. He's affiliated with the devil now. Rutrow.

This is on the Twitter page for Clay:

Bio The official Twitter page for Clay Aiken. This feed is updated by Clay's team. Clay does not have a personal Twitter.

Oh whew. He's not personally affiliated with the devil then...just TC is, lol. :hysterical:

Thanks for setting up the twitter thread. I have a twitter account that I set up for a project I was working on but I've never gone back. It's just not my thing. why say it in 140 characters when you can write a few paragraphs. :cryingwlaughter:

:highfive:

9-11-01candle.gif

Thanks for the beautiful graphic!

I ran across this story today that I wasn't aware of before. Some of you probably already know about it, and some of the photos have been published. A professional photographer who lived nearby and went to the site to take photos was killed when the second tower fell. He had taken a lot of digital photos which were recovered via the memory card. (His other cameras and the film were destroyed.) The story is here: Bill Biggart's Final Exposures, and you can see some of the photos here: photos. They are in chronological order. Here's a photo of his effects, including the cameras. It's a sad story, but on today, for me it's also important to remember the courage so many showed on that day, and his story helped me do that.

Thanks for posting that. I've never seen his pictures before. Kind of surreal that he took them and all of that was going on before the second tower fell and he put himself in the line of fire so to speak. Also surreal is just 30 seconds ago, the twin towers flashed on my screen because Independence Day is on.

Strummer did. It's possible that you haven't heard from someone who had a problem because they can't use their computers to tell you.

Hi guys. *waves* I'm posting for strummer6 right now.

She said she decided to vote on that Twitterwall poll this morning. She was hit with a 'browser hijack' as soon as she clicked on the link to vote. Her computer is completely crashed right now and she can't use it, so she called and asked me to let people know what happened. Whatever it is blocked her McAfee, so she can't do a scan. It download porn to her computer and won't allow her to use any of her browsers.

That's really all I know.

The thing is, if you are computer savvy to the max, you're not going to get in trouble, if your security is all set up exactly right, you aren't going to get in trouble, but not everyone knows all these things that some of you assume are common knowledge. Giving people a simple warning and a little information about what to do isn't such a bad thing. If that had been done with every post posting the link here at FCA, a whole lot less attention would've been given to it than there has been, that's for sure.

I'm not sure. I'm worried. :(

If I hear from her tomorrow, I'll pass on the message. It's gonna be quite awhile before she is well.

Nope. The only person I haven't heard from is Sparky and she doesn't "do" polls, lol and she's not online because she's not well.

She doesn't want porn huh? I still remember one of the first Clay videos that I downloaded from ATCA back in 2004 came in part Clay and then the porn kicked it. Sadly, it was only like 10 seconds worth, lol.

BTW, does anybody know what happened to either the girl that ran ATCA or to Gonzo (other than she let her site go in order to pursue a Masters or something)?

Wherever Strummer picked up the virus, I personally don't believe that the virus came from clicking to vote for Clay because Adam has over 98,000 votes and Clay has over 97,000 votes, to say nothing of all of the votes other candidates have... that's a ton of voting going on with no issues. OFC has a 280 page long Twitter Wall cheering thread and they've been voting like maniacs. I still think that it's entirely possible that Strummer caught the virus prior to going to the Twitterwall cuz viruses don't always hit instantaneously. If it's only one person who's gotten hit by a virus while that page was on her screen, when there are like 300, 000 votes on the wall, then I gotta think she picked the virus up elsewhere and it just happened to take effect when she was on that page.

I just asked in the OFC thread if anybody has encountered any problems just to be sure though, OK?

The thing is, if you are computer savvy to the max, you're not going to get in trouble, if your security is all set up exactly right, you aren't going to get in trouble, but not everyone knows all these things that some of you assume are common knowledge.
My security actually isn't set up all that high. I lowered the defences down to minimal for about 2 years because I couldn't access the CV ftp folders to upload clack. I recently had to ask for help re: lowering the defenses so I wouldn't get the script message every time I wanted to post link on a messageboard, so I wouldn't say that I'm THAT computer savvy but I just plain don't click anything that I don't know what it is no matter what site I'm on.

Once again, if you get a pop-up on any site and you don't know what it is, especially if you get a pop-up saying that your computer has been infected and it has a button in the window to click asking you to run a scan on your computer by clicking a link, do NOT click anything inside the pop-up window...even if one of the options is "close" or "ignore" or "cancel". Personally I don't even click the X on a suspicious pop-up. I always hold ctrl and alt together and then click the delete button and in the Windows Task Manager that pops up, I click on the link in question the list of tasks being run on my computer, then "End Task". That way, there is zero chance of accidentally clicking a link that will do something nasty to my computer. You can always run a scan with your anti-virus and anti-spyware program once the pop-up is gone. I've had "a threat has been deleted on your computer" messages pop up when clicking on links that I got from a google search looking for lyrics to songs, etc... FYI: Smiley Central is spyware.

Short version:

1. Do NOT click on anything in an unfamiliar pop-up window, especially sudden "Your computer has been infected" pop-ups.

2. To get rid of the pop-up, hold Ctrl and Alt together and click the delete button at the same time and then click "end task".

From the OFC:

I've been voting since we started voting and haven't picked up a virus from the site. There is an ad that occasionally pops up from some place that want's you to download their antivirus thing by scare tactics. Click on the red X box to close it, or just close out your entire window. Do NOT click on the ad itself. I haven't seen that ad in about a week though.
That's the one that I saw and like this poster said, I haven't seen it for a week or so.

Another poster said:

I have been voting since the beginning on 3 different computers. No problems of virus or pop ups.
