It was at the end of History Detectives, after several other spots. Something about Inspector Lewis, one of those PBS regular groups of singers whose name escapes me already, Live from Lincoln Center, maybe a few others, and then at the end, Clay!!! They showed him singing Mack the Knife, the line "Mackie's back in town," then the letters HE'S BACK really big on the screen, and then the "airplane note" from Unchained Melody. The rest I have blanked, it was very short, but they definitely mentioned his name and the date.

Congrats, aikim!

There is a new PBS interview vaulted this morning from Memphis that is apparently very good and includes some Unicef footage. You can find it at ClackUnlimited here:

Found this great Hammond M&G recap by Banshee at CV:

Finally getting a chance to post my Hammond M&G recap!

Be warned, it is rather lengthy… (This post may travel)

First of all, a big shout out and hugs to my travel bud and great friend, LauraQ. She is also the Ticket Queen and I bless her for snagging the.most.awesome. row 2 seats ever!! (we were in the Clay side corner, next to Neelie and just in front of 73 year old Groovin’ Alan). I did miss sharing this concert with some other close friends who could not attend.

It was great to see Scarlett, Starfishy, Cindilu2 and countless others again!! Wonderful to meet Neelie, Jazzgirl, Nicki503 and Pennyb30 and many others. I apologize for not remembering the names of everyone in my M&G – the mind wanders at a time like that!

We made it to the venue in plenty of time to find the box office and scope out The Venue (yes, the name of the venue at Hammond is: The Venue………sort of reminded me of a Laurel and Hardy skit…..)

As we were waiting and chatting, the lovely Nicki503 was introduced to me. She took me aside to ask me a favor regarding the M&G. Seems her good friend Cathy, aka Pennyb30 (WISCathylovesClay at the CB) also had a M&G. Actually, Cathy had PMd me a while back when we found out we both had won one, and introduced ourselves that way. It turns out that Cathy had not seen Clay live since ’04. Her life was interrupted by a brain aneurysm. She had surgery (at least one) which had some lasting after effects on her brain function and left her with a titanium plate in her head. She was thrilled to win this M&G. Her daughter and daughter’s friend had brought her to Hammond. Cathy was very concerned that she would not remember anything about the M&G and also that she would be too emotional too function, which was somewhat of an after effect of her surgery. Nicki503 asked if I would keep a special eye on Cathy, which I was more than happy to do.

Forward to Jerome appearing for the “role call”. The charity winners were called first and escorted into the inner lobby of The Venue. The five winners of the fanclub M&G were next. Jerome was friendly and playful in his interaction and the way he determined who we were supposed to be. (he called out our initials only and we had to fill in our name).

Jerome then disappeared to take the first group to Clay. A venue security officer escorted our group into The Venue lobby. While doing so, he told us to “take off our shirts”………LOL, not really, that’s just what one of the ladies thought he said. What he really said was to “take a look at the shirts” that were available for sale. We did that and then had a seat in the red lobby chairs to await further instructions. While there we chatted amongst ourselves and got to know each other a bit. I already knew Cindilu2, and Cathy took that time to share a bit of her health history and concerns with everyone. We caught a glimpse of Ben, Casey and another man (Devin?) walking past us together. I had not seen Devin before so wasn’t sure.

The security guard passed us again and said he was relieved to see we still had our shirts on..! We were then escorted to the doorway into the auditorium itself. We were taken along the side of the seats up to the front center row of the venue and told to take seats in the front row. Clay’s assistant Cheryl was there to greet us. Cathy sat in the aisle seat and I sat next to her. Clay appeared on the stage, coming from the side stage area. He greeted us all as he approached. (OK at this point consider everything paraphrased as far as exactly what Clay said, unless I have it in quotes!). Something like hey, how is everyone doing today. Cathy put her hands over her face in universal OMG language as soon as Clay appeared. Clay walked over to the edge of the stage and proceeded to clamber down right in front of us. This provided a very, very nice view of the man.

Ginger fur on arms and legs. Stubble. Dark blue/ thin white striped Henley with dark blue shirt underneath, all sleeves pushed up. Ginger fur on arms and legs. Stubble. Cargo shorts, laceless tan/white tennies. Gorgeous green eyes, hot mess hair. Did I mention the ginger fur on arms and legs and the stubble…..Oh yeah, I did.

Clay was going to ask everyone’s name, he walked over to Cathy first, looked at her, waved his hand at her and said “you’re crazy” in a dismissive tone. (Remember she had her hands over her mouth, her eyes were huge and she was probably chanting oh my gosh, oh my gosh). Of course this was Clay being snarky, I patted Cathy’s leg and said, he’s kidding you know. Clay went down to the opposite end or the row of us and then started there with names and handshakes. He then asked where we were from, he remembered one of the ladies from a previous meeting and knew where she was from. I told him I was from Michigan, and no, he didn’t hold up his palm and ask me which part…. : When Cathy was telling Clay where she was from, she explained her health issues, and that she was emotional and would have trouble remembering things due to them. Clay listened attentively, when he found out that her daughter and a friend had brought her, he asked where they were. Cathy told him they were waiting out by the box office. Clay turned to Jerome and made a circular motion with his hand indicating for Jerome to go find them. We all looked at each other and grinned. First class, compassionate Clay at work right in front of us. Alas the girls could not be found, at least not right away.

Clay then returned to the beginning of our line up and asked us one at a time what we did for a living. I thought that was a pretty cool way to get conversing. I had not really read any other M&G recaps this tour so am not sure when else he may have done this. He had a nice chat with one of the ladies about being a teacher, and which grades they preferred teaching. Cindilu thanked Clay saying that without being a fan she probably would not have learned the necessary skills to do computer graphics. I think lots of us can relate to learning lots of new computer skills, right?!

He got to me and I told him I am a dog trainer & boarding kennel owner. I was already smiling because I figured this would induce a Raleigh & Durham conversation, and it did! Clay’s first response to me was.”Oh, really!” And he said it with an expression on his face as if to say, girl, we need to talk about my dogs! We chatted a bit, he said his dogs needed help. I told him that when I heard he was getting a second dog I laughed because he was pressing his luck since Raleigh seemed so good with all the traveling and was seemingly well behaved. He countered that Durham was the better behaved and trained. Raleigh may be more social but apparently has “issues” with a mind of her own. Clay then proceeded to tell us that Raleigh can get up on to things as high as the stage, steal food, drag a whole carcass (or some such thing) down three flights of stairs and out the door. He did call her a “big food whore”. LOL! I reminded him that he owned terriers, what did he expect!

As Clay was talking to Cathy about her being from Baraboo, Wisconsin, home of the Circus World Museum, her daughter and friend showed up, which made everyone smile. Someone had found them. Cathy did a great job chatting with Clay, he was so supportive of her and was asking lots of circus questions and looking over brochures she had brought. You did good Cathy! And of course it gave me a good chance to keep checking out, er, observing Clay at close quarters.

Picture time was next, and wow that went quick! One shot and on to the next person. I am not sure I want to see how mine comes out. It was nice though since we had our arms around each other’s backs and with my 2” heel sandals on I was 6’ tall so we were cheek to cheek, yes I brushed his (unintentionally – I can’t help being tall….LOL!)

Then he asked us all what we had brought to be signed. He used the stage as a desk to put things on while signing. He was asking what specifically people wanted him to write on their items. Some had written down what they wanted to make it easy on him. So, my item has a back story. During the JNT ’05, I was blessed to make it to NYC for the weekend and saw one of Clay’s shows at The Beacon. I have a friend who is friends with someone who got her backstage that night. She took my copy of HITS magazine that has Clay on the cover (thumbnail included at end of this novella..) back with her in case she could get Clay to sign it. So she comes out from backstage looking smug and tells me the following. Clay apparently took her item and gave it a personalized autograph, then took my item, signed his name only on it and told her: “if she wants it personalized she’ll have to bring it herself”. I laughed so hard, snarky Clay at his best. So I put the item carefully away, remembered it when I won my M&G and brought it to Hammond. When I handed him the magazine I said, “I realize this is already signed, but I am bringing it back to be personalized per your directive”. That stopped him in his tracks, he looked at me and looked at the magazine. I could tell he was trying to remember the situation which is when I jumped in and said, you aren’t going to remember since it was 2005, and I proceeded to give him a very brief history of why I was bringing the magazine back to him. When I told him what he said to my friend in 05, he said “Did I?”.He said this with the cutest mixture of contrition, disbelief, and snark that you can imagine, all with a smirk and a sort of sideways glance at Cheryl and Jerome as if conveying do y’all believe that I would ever behave that way? LOL!!

He then asked what I wanted him to write on it and I said whatever you like, just please spell my name right (it is always getting spelled “wrong”). So he turned to write, which took a minute, then handed it back to me. Above the already existing signature he wrote: “Dianne, thanks for waiting”. Below the signature he drew a smiley face and wrote “Hope it was worth it!”. LOL, looking at his comments again today, they seem most appropo seeing as I was a “virgin”. Well, a M&G virgin that is! :

When he was finished signing he asked if we had questions, nobody really piped up so he then had everyone stand up again for a hug. A few of the ladies asked questions as they went in for their hugs. I believe someone asked if he saw anyone from Spamalot when they did the Timeless show in NYC and he said yes, 3 or 4 were there. The hug – ye gads what a hug. My chin fit right on his shoulder and I got to fully wrap my arms up and over that nice back and broad shoulder blades. Niiiiiiice. Didn’t squeeze inappropriately, but man I have the feel of that back imprinted on my brain and arms! He gives a great hug in return, too ;-) While hugging him I said “You are well worth the wait Clay” (in response to what he wrote on my magazine) and he said “Aww, thank you”.

Cathy had an individual photo taken with Clay and then he pulled her daughter and friend in for one with the four of them. He was so sweet about it all and they were thrilled.

He told us to enjoy the show and we were off. I was grinning so hard my face hurt!

The show itself was phenomenal. It was extra nice having the seat I did as I know Clay saw me and recognized me from the M&G and could see for himself how much I (and everyone) was enjoying it. Such joy!! We are blessed as fans to have this man and have each other.

I watched the final TOML from Biloxi last night and it was just so sweet, it almost made me cry. What a wonderful tour!

This story about Cathy is what I was referring to in my (very brief) recap of the M&G. I was so hoping her story would be told because for me, it was really something special to see unfold. The subtle change in Clay's demeanor once he realized the situation was beautiful to watch. He was still teasing, snarky Clay, but just that much more gentle. I really did fall in love all over again in those few moments. The other very cool thing was the silent communication between Clay and Jerome (when indicating that he should go find the daughters). Jerome really never takes his eyes off Clay and there is no doubt in my mind that it wouldn't take more than that crook of Clay's finger for him to take you out.

Also the 'take your t-shirt off' thing was me. OMG it was funny - I would have sworn that was what he said. In fact I actually leaned back out the door and asked him (laughing of course) to repeat it. I said dang, didn't realize it was that kind of meet and greet. He said 'you're gonna get me fired.'

Coming hesitantly out of lurkdom. . . . When I first joined all you lovely folks here at FCA last year, many of you were so welcoming (thanks !) that I shouldn't feel at all shy about returning !

What a fabulous couple of concerts--in Milwaukee, and best of all, a few days ago in Hammond !! Hi, thanks, and hugs to my friend and travel director buddy, Grape4CA, who made it all possible !

Also, it seems I've forgotten (no surprise there !) how to reply to parts of multiple posts--hence, this low-tech reply !

Cindilu, it was so great to finally meet you !! And you do give the best bigass hugs ever ! Muahhh to you ! :BlowKiss:

I had been looking forward to your M & G almost as much as you were, I think (ridiculous, I know). To be able to share the anticipation beforehand was lovely--waiting for the passes and waiting for you to go in to see The Man himself were nicely nervous-making. And your face afterwards !? That's what I had hoped most to see for myself !! May I say you looked like you had swallowed the sun ?! So much joy and so many smiles are rare in life, and I feel privileged to have shared yours and to be able carry the memory with me for a long time! :yahoo:

Also, I had been hoping to meet more of you at the concert, so the bonus was that we did get to meet you too, luckiest1 ! Thanks for the greetings, and I hope you're feeling much better !

I love Clay !! Forever and ever !

cindi... at least you will never forget a moment of that whole experience, even if some of the funny is on your shoulders. It sure would have been interesting to hear what he would have said about your design abilities! You might have been hired on the spot... LOL He would have for sure if he'd seen some of your fantastic work! Next tour, you need to give Jerome a scrapbook of your work to show Clay. I love the relationship Clay and Jerome have developed. I wonder if Jerome ever dreamed when he took the job of guarding Clay during the AI2 tour where it would lead. I bet Parker thinks he is another grampa.

My life has been so enriched by knowing this Clay Aiken guy!

I got a tweet from Team Clay to say that all remaining TNT dates are now up on the OFC. I went over to look but am not sure that it is complete....weren't there rumoured dates in Ann Arbor, MI and Oregon? Maybe they didn't pan out?

I got the same tweet, excited to see when the St. Louis date, which was rumored, would be. Didn't find it. This makes me think that the list isn't TOTALLY complete.

I'm also not real thrilled that the Chicagoland show, in Waukegan, is on a Wednesday evening. Really tough for me to get away for that one. Hmmmm.

:3: to headoverheels. "you looked like you had swallowed the sun" is a great line.

cindilu2: So - you've changed your profession because of Clay, were prepared to disrobe at your M&G, and were persuaded to be a lesbian for a free breakfast on a Clay trip? Did I mention that Clay has an inheritance waiting for him in a Nigerian bank, and if you send me your bank account and credit card information, it would be instrumental in helping him get access to at least $5,000,000? :26:

Nothing less than 5 and a half hours drive for us Claynadians (at least those in my neck of the woods). That's a long drive at that time of year. I don't want another Erie scenario. Good thing I grabbed those Charlotte tickets when I did....at least I can get to an airport in 2 hours. :P
