  1. In this drought time, I've decided to increase my awareness of gay issues by working my way through Afterelton.com's "50 best gay movies." Number 3 is Latter Days, and I like it so much I thought I'd share. It's a story about a young missionary coming to terms with his gayness (and falling in love) in relation to a religion and family that says it's a sin and he'll burn in hell. I can't help but think Clay went through some of the same torment (even though he says otherwise). Anyhow, I watched it on NetFlix instant play if anyone is interested. I'd love to hear what someone else thinks of it.

I watched Shelter too--and liked it also. Why didn't I know there were these kinds of movies out there? A whole world invisible to the straight one?

    Or just me????

  2. Well, I always watch AI--I like to support young people trying to get a break. And, I usually like Ellen ok--although the only time I've watcher her show is when Clay was on as I don't watch daytime TV., However, I thought she sucked bigtimes when she was on SYTYCD. Her humor was so strained and didn't fit. I hope she just sticks with "I liked it" or "I didn't like it" and forgets trying to be clever.

  3. I went to the AI concert with my Clay buddy CJ last night and thought of CouchieMama and cheered extra loud for Adam (NOT that I needed to as every time even a slight picture of him flashed on the screen the crowd went berserk). It was fun to see people as thrilled to see Adam as we are all thrilled to see Clay. I'll give a brief recap here, WARNING, so you can scroll if you hate all things AI and/or Adam.

The stage has a big screen all the way behind it, screens on the sides, and jumbotrons AND coordinated video and light shows on the screens (and in the air) throughout. The sound system in San Jose was lousy--too loud, somewhat muffled, so it was hard to hear what people said--lots of bass. The singers sang some stuff from AI, but a lot was new--and better. They presented the singers as a countdown from #10 to #1, with the first singers getting a couple of songs and the later ones getting 3 or 4--varied. Michael was typical lounge singer. Megan was blah. CJ didn't like her either--nor did anyone around us. Anoop sang one song and then said something we couldn't understand and put on Buddy Holly glasses for the rest of the night. Lill was good--but not very distinctive. I thought Scott (who rose up from the floor with his piano) was considerably better than he had been on AI--maybe because he started with a good rocking song and did well. He and Matt later rose up with TWO pianos and played duets. Matt was good.

Each singer got a few seconds to give a personal greeting--Adam just thanked everyone for support, and most did a similar spiel, but Danny talked about how his wife died and when she had surgery she had a 90% chance of survivival and died......He got a bit emotional talking about how you have to go on after tragedy and follow your dreams. It all seemed a little strange in the middle of the rock celebration, but I guess he's still dealing with his grief. I've never particularly liked Danny's singing, and I found him a little boring. Allison rocked--she's quite good and she and Adam later sang Slow Ride (fantastic).

The place went wild when Adam came out and he was like electric after the rest of the show. He was writhing, thrusting, and dancing all over that stage. Sometimes it was hard to hear him for the screams (sound familiar??) Lots of kids in the audience and they clearly loved him. I was hoping he'd sing Black/White but he didn't. Mad World was mad good and one of the few songs I could actually hear clearly. He started with a long jacket--hair in a pompador--and after a couple of songs he threw the jacket and (CROWD SCREAMING) he was wearing a sleeveless V-neck tight shirt. He sang Fame and was great. (I like the guy.) One BIG problem was the frigging fog machine went wild when he was one stage so you could hardly see him part of the time (CONSPIRACY??????) When he and Allison were singing Slow Ride I could see Adam madly waving his arm back and forth in front of his face at the finale when and Allison are facing each other as I'm sure he could hardly see her.

I felt a little bad for Kris having to follow Adam but the crowd screamed like crazy for him when he came out even though it was more subdued after that. I think everyone wanted him to feel ok about Adam--I know that CJ and I screamed like hell for Kris too. Honestly, I'd always found Kris a little on the milquetoast side on AI, but he held his own. Much better songs and he had the whole crowd on its feet singing along with Hey Jude (smart song choice).

Alll in all, it was a fun time but I could hardly hear for about 3 hours afterward (and I used ear plugs part of the time). I shudder to think about the ear damage occurring to all those young kids in the audience.

  4. My mom lived with me for 17 years before she died at 98. She had Alzheimer's disease for the last 10 years, so I know all about caregiving and the need for a giant sense of humor! She broke her hip at 95 and didn't understand and wouldn't cooperate and wouldn't stay in bed at the convalescent hospital where she was supposed to have rehab, so I brought her home on the third day after surgery and had a physiotherapist come to the house. After a night with Mom trying to climb out of bed and yelling all night, the therapist came and asked how I was doing, and I told her I was trying hard to decide whether it would be better to kill myself or Mom. I'll never forget the look on her face!!!

Humor. Black humor. Outrageous humor. It's the love that counts.
