Clay could surprise us and sing songs we are not even expecting.

And that's exactly what I'm expecting. Sure, there are songs that I think he'd be great at singing, and I like reading people's suggestions (for example, I'd never thought of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," but he'd KILL on that). At the same time, though -- my realism sets in, and I tell myself that I have no expectations. OK, that's not quite true. My expectations are this: Clay will sing, he'll sound great, and I'll be a happy camper.

What more could a girl (or guy) want?

What a surprise to see that song mentioned. My teenage grandson was showing me what he had on his ipod just last week and that was one of the songs. I could not imagine where he had heard it but he said he gets all of his songs from itunes; never listens to the radio. He has quite a collection of different genres. He is just a music lover.

I am excited about Clay's new CD and think it will be great.

This gives me hope. All the songs on my teenage grandsons are rock from artists, (if you can call them that) that I have never heard of. They get them from itunes also.

  2. Okay you Bedpost people, you asked for it! What about:

    Papa Oom Papa Maw Maw

    Rama Lama Ding Dong

Who Put the Bomp in the Bomp, Ba-Bomp, Ba-Bomp

How Much is that Doggie in the Window

    Sixteen Tons

    This Old House

Yummy Yummy Yummy (I Got Love in My Tummy)

    The Bird is the Word

    My Boy Lollipop

Beep Beep (The Nash Rambler Song)

    Running Bear

The Name Game? (Clay Clay bo-bay banana-fana fo-fay fee fie mo-may, Clay! A little trick with Nick .....

    Then the Country songs:

Drop Kick Me Jesus Through the Goal Posts of Life

I've Got Tears in My Ears from Lyin' on My Back While I Cry in My Bed Over You

The Only Ring You Gave Me Was the One Around the Tub

Take the Dice Away from Baby, Mama, Before He Craps All Over the Floor

You Can I Miss You, If You Won't Go Away

How Can You Believe Me When I Say I Love You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life?

Get Off the Stove, Grandma, You're Too Old To Ride the Range (with props to Dave Barry!)

Can't leave out the Death Songs:

    Tell Laura I Love Her

    Teen Angel

    Honey

    Patches

    Last Kiss

    Leader of the Pack

I'm sure there are 20 more I can't remember (blessedly).

The songs that made me hurl, even back then:

    Dreams of the Everyday Housewife

Walk Like a Man (who was it that said .... "Hey, Frankie, SING like a man!)

    Take a Letter, Maria

Wives and Lovers (Hey, little girl, comb your hair, fix your make-up, soon he will open the door)

He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)

    Johnny Get Angry

Treat Her Like A Lady (As strange as it seems, you can't treat a woman mean)

Could there be a chance for:

    MacArthur Park?

Volare? (clearly a classic from the '50's for several people)

American Woman (Get away from me)?

    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida?

Baby I'm-A Want You (about which Barry wrote: Baby, I'm-a too lazy to write lyrics that scan, so I'm-a just adding an extra "a" whenever I'm-a need a syllable)

But for a real suggestion: One of those barn-burners by Brenda Lee from the 60's .... All Alone Am I, I Want to be Wanted, Break It To Me Gently, I'm Sorry ... Brenda Lee had big hits with her BIG VOICE! Clay can do things with his voice most other popular singers can't do -- and I believe he should do it! It's why I loved that he sang "Without You" .... BECAUSE HE COULD!!!!!!!

Agree about the big voice songs, but what is wrong with "Volare?" It is a big band song, with great music, and not so great lyrics, but I would love to hear Clay sing in "Italian." I like Dean Martin's voice, because it is so distinctive, and so is Clay's. So if Clay sang this, it would be a totally new song. I think it would be fun. Kinda like when he killed with "Mack the Knife." I never liked that song until Clay sang it!

  3. Another reason to hate winter...about an hour ago we noticed our water pressure had dropped, so I called the village and find out there is a water main break...happened about 7:00 a.m. this morning and they have been working on it all day. They finally turned our water completely off. Have no idea when it will be back on and we will have a 24 hour boil alert when it does.

This was 4:00 when I called...you think they could have found some way to notify us since this has been going on since 7:00 a.m.?

Will probably have to make a run for bottled water or go out side and start bringing in buckets of snow, LOL!

To say I am a bit peeved is an understatement!

    ETA: Water's back!

I had my own water drama this morning. It has been below freezing here for the last three nights, and this morning at 5AM, I woke up to my doorbell ringing. It was still very dark, and it scared the heck out of me. I have a stained glass front door so there is no way I can peek to see who it is without being seen. I almost called 911, but I am sure glad that I didn't. I went to the door and saw a man, heart started pounding until I recognized that it was my next door neighbor. He had come to tell me that I had a busted water pipe!..There was water all over the place. There were three neighbors and myself in PJs and robes, with flashlights, trying to turn off water in the dark.

We got it turned off. Tomorrow I call the plumber. The local 10 o'clock new's first story was about all the pipes that had frozen and broken all over Houston and how some plumbers were working round the clock. I saw my exact problem on my TV several times, but it did not make me feel any better that I had not been the only one!

I did try to wrap all my pipes and I only missed one, and it BROKE! Bummer!

  4. Thanks to kimiye, I'm mostly working with an external webcam. Skype was EASY. Gmail video chat worked except that she couldn't hear me -- we could see each other and I could hear her just fine! I'm trying to find someone else who can work with me on the gmail chat to figure out if it was my problem or not.

Best part -- totally free! Well, except that I pay for my internet service! LOL!

That's great re: external. I have always had issues with externals. The internals are a no brainer. Great that it works for you though, it's nice to be able to see and hear your friend without extra costs.

goldarngirl... I have an external with Skype and have only ever gotten a black screen. My friends husband was supposed to help me get it working, but they then went thru a rough patch in their marriage and I didn't want to ask. Maybe soon?? I wanted to figure it out so I can see the grandkids that live the furtherest away more often than once every 4-6 weeks.

Desertrose... I'll have to try MSN Messenger, that sounds great!

treenuts... Eeeeeeeeee!!!! What a good way to refresh peoples minds who Clay is before a new CD comes out! I just feel that this is going to be a good year for Clay and us'n!

I forgot to mention that we also had to use a head set. I got the GE noise canceling 800 MIC Headset. It was a combination microphone and earphone combination. It worked great. They probably have better technology now.

There were two versions of Messenger. We liked MSN messenger better. The box gave you a voice option that made the other persons computer ring like a phone. I do not have messenger downloaded now or I would go check if it still works the same.

My daughter lived in Tokyo for 5 years. In that time we communicated through MSN messenger. We could talk for hours and we could see each other on an Intel camera that I bought at Circuit City at the time. I bought one for her also and sent it to Tokyo. Messenger worked really well. It was free except that we were both paying for internet service.

In the beginning, we would have to email that we were going to get on messenger so both of us would get on at the same time. Sometimes I would leave messenger on all day. They hardly ever kicked us off. One time I was in the bathroom, and I heard one of my grandkids calling, GRANDMA. He was calling me all the way from Amman Jordan, which was where they were living at the time. Interesting thing was that my daughter heard of using messenger this way from a Jordanian friend.

Towards the end, Messenger came up with a better system, where one could make the other person's computer actually ring like a telephone. This was great. In the last three years I have not used messenger anymore because Daughter and family now live in Dallas, and it is cheap to call and visit her.

Using messenger with intel camera kept us in touch every day and it did not cost anything. Once in a while, very seldom, messenger would have to close, and they always gave us a notice to "please finish our conversation in the next five minutes because it need to close." I thought that was very sweet since we had it open all day almost every day.

  6. Thanks guys for the well wishes? Did I mention that there are some new eyedrops from Russia (not approved in the USA yet) which are supposed to actually dissolve cataracts? am wondering whether to try them. They are supposed to help all kinds of eye problems including glaucoma. I had a floater since I was a teenager, most annoying when reading and even after decades I still kept trying to brush it off the page I was reading! Well I suddenly noticed a couple of months ago that it was gone!

luckiest1 Congratulations, I hope you got a nice raise with your promotion!

JMO But I wouldn't put anything in my eyes that I was not 100% sure that it would not hurt my eyes. Please be careful. My understanding is that Glaucoma is high blood pressure in the eye totally different than cataracts, so I would have to question how the same drops would take care of both problems.

I know several people that have had cataracts removed, and they were all surprised at how well the procedure went and how good the results were. Most of them also had a lens placed in their eyes and no longer need glasses for everything. My Dad who is 93 had the surgery 5 years ago, did not have any problems, and also is very happy with the result. He had one eye done at a time. He also had the lens put in.

  7. Tweet:

jordanFREAKOUT: It's my parents aniversary ... this is what my mom said,"FWD: We are at the same restaurant as Ruben studdard and Clay Aiken"

merrieeee... thanks for bringing the twitters. I'm feeling that they really are going to do something together, just what will it be??? That is the question!

Everyone, please send good vibes my way tomorrow. I have lost sight in my left eye and am going to the eye dr tomorrow afternoon. I'm thinking it might be a detached retina. Even with having to undergo surgery if it is, I just want to see well enough to drive and work. My right eye is fine, but making a left turn or moving into a left lane is really scary right now. Thanks!!!

Sending good vibes. Be careful driving though. It is scary. Have you had a detached retina before?

  8. From CV:

    Chris Walden

Current projects: Chris just finished composing the music to the upcoming feature film MONSTER MUTT. He also just finished arranging and conducting for the upcoming CLAY AIKEN album for Decca Records. At the moment Chris is arranging for an album with HELEN SCHNEIDER and the SWR -Bigband.

Hmmm...conducting. Sounds like there's an orchestra involved...sounds good to me!

He also does big band arrangements, and has worked with the last few seasons of American Idol.

Sounds really good to me! Clay and big band WOW! Walden also lists Jazz as one of his specialties!

  9. From what I was watching this morning on several of the parade pre-shows, the floats all have to be of "natural" ingredients, not necessarily "edible" ingredients. Most the floats seems to be made of flowers, bark (from trees), seeds (such as lettuce and mustard seeds), and ground spices. I'll have to double check on this, but I think there's not a lot of edible food used in the floats.

Wasted food makes me totally upset too. I tend to support places that can reuse food (safely, of course). It's hard to find these places, but they are out there.

Thats good to hear. I always thought that the Rose Bowl floats consisted of Roses. Of course, I have never been to one and even though I would love to go, I will probably never get to. My cousin and her husband went to the Rose Parade this year. They have gone before. I will save my money for the wonderful Clay year that I hope will happen in 2010.

Women's shelters can always use donated food. I know because I used to serve on the board of one back in another life. At that time the women had to get food stamps, and each one was responsible for buying the food, cooking it and feeding her own children. I do not know if it works that way now, but donated food was always a big help to these women.

  10. kim, that poem is great. If I can do half of what it says....

Anyone watching the Rose Parade? I LOVED the snowboarding dogs! And I have to admit that the blind marching band moved me to tears. Talk about inclusion...

*envisions Clay making notes for the 2010 Gala*

I am not really watching it but I did see the adorable snowboarding dogs! Awww!!! And the blind marching band made me cry! However I always cringe at all the wasted food that is part of the floats and think about how many starving people it would feed.

Maybe some of it is salvageable, and they send it to shelters. I do believe that there is always the concern that if the food is not fresh, it could make people sick. There are so many hungry people in the US that it seems almost sinful to waste food this way. JMO

  11. Ahem, my intention is not to insult anyone, and I know that if you can't say something nice it's better to say nothing ... but what the hell, here I go.

I finally saw a live performance of Lambert on SYTYCD last night. My reaction is .... who are his fans? I can't see what anyone sees in him. That garb he was wearing was laughable. What was that on his shoulder, a fungus or something? It was unclear to me if the eyeliner was intentional, or a dripping mess. The retro spats were hideous. The whole look was bizarro, and not in a good way. His hair was over-black, over-processed, and not flattering. The pound of make-up made me wonder ... just how bad is his skin, really?

His voice is not even in the same town as greatness, unless you think a screeching, whining Axl Rose was one of the greats. And his floppy tongue hanging out on the high screeches was so off-putting it made me and my granddaughter go "Ewwwwww" at the same time twice. That song he sang was instantly forgettable, nothing more than ordinary pop pablum, and I don't know if he is capable of singing high notes without screaming. Is he really supposed to be so talented? If this guy would put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and blow-dry his hair, and wash his face, and sing unaffectly with his tongue in his mouth, he may have a future. But what I saw last night were the death throes of a desperate marketing campaign. Hated it. I don't foresee ever making an effort to hear or watch this guy again. I simply can't stand fakes, and that's what I saw last night, in flashing day-glo.

The aftermath of that performance only made me more and more hungry for real talent, real music, i.e., new music from Clay Aiken. And I don't care what he sings. Or if it's considered hip or classic. It'll be real, and warm, and wonderful, that much I know.

    Year Seven coming up. Wow.

Not insulted here. I see Lambert the same way you do. What I can not figure out is that a lot of Clay fans appear to "love" him. I just am not seeing the talent. All I see is the desperate attempt to bring attentions to himself, and not in a good way. I have seen photos without makeup, and he does have bad skin with a lot of what appear to be acne scars or pockmarks. I love the description of your reaction to Adam, you definitely have a way with words.

  12. I have some sad news. A friend of mine, who mainly lurked here, sassafras, passed away on November 10. I received an email today from her son. He included a link to a wonderful montage he created of his mom, from her early years right up to the present. Those in Raleigh may remember Cynthia from parties and get togethers. She was a good friend and loved Clay very much. She opened her home to me, my family and friends over the years and I will miss her very much. I am so glad that we had the chance to spend some time with her in October, when we were in town for the gala.

    Tribute to Cynthia

Sorry about the loss of your friend. I am glad that you got to spend time with her in October. I watched the Tribute montage, and she seems like a woman who enjoyed living life to the fullest.

  13. On Houston's new mayor - believe it or not, especially in the initial election, Annise's orientation wasn't a biggie because frankly she's been in politics here forever and she's a perfectly boring accountant and will be a perfectly adequate mayor - just like Gene Locke was a perfectly boring lawyer, and Brown (hell, I can't even remember his first name) was a perfectly boring architect and would have probably been perfectly adequate mayors. I think our "alternative" paper, the Houston Press called them dull, duller and dullest. It sounds paranoid, but external interests did try and stir up some sturm und drang but went about it in the wrong way - they should have said she was for the Ashby High Rise or wanted to put MetroRail on Richmond or thought Bill White sucked. Frankly, Houston tends to like accountants better than lawyers in running the city because we tend to elect our comptroller (and honestly, Brown just appeared to be super old and wanted to be Mayor before he died). The turnout was incredible pitiful - and I heard about two of Locke's supported sending out flyers against "teh ghey" - but nobody I know got them (and frankly, my mother probably would have been the target audience). She knows Annise is married to some woman and has been for years and thinks it's a little strange and knows disapproving is not right but says she's working on it, but Annise being gay isn't why she didn't vote for her - she's 70 and frankly just votes for black candidates when she can (although she loves Bill White). She would have voted for Annise if Gene wasn't in it because women candidates are her second choice.

I started up the MWCL and AIW rotation this weekend (people, I can't get into Christmas too early...no, no, no, no, no!)

I got the flyers, and this is the first time that I have ever gotten anything like that. I was really surprised. One had a picture of Parker with her partner as she was being sworn in as city controller. The heading said, "Is This The Image You Want to Project for Houston?" in big bold black letters. It went on to spout religious dogma and state that the sender did not hate homosexuals, just their choice of lifestyle, that in fact he had friends and relatives that had homosexual children. Then he went on to say that voting for Parker would just be encouraging this type of behavior and lead to homosexual marriages. It read like it was a choice and a deviant lifestyle. It went on and on like that, and it never addressed the issue of Parker qualifications or lack of qualifications. It also said being a lesbian does not qualify Parker to be mayor.

The second flyer, I did not bother reading because the first one made me mad. I just tossed it into the recycle bin. I asked my son if he had gotten one, he said no. I asked him if he had voted in the first election. He said no. I asked a couple of neighbors, and they had not voted and had not gotten flyers either. Then I read in the newspaper that only those who had voted in the Mayors election were being targeted. The flyers were not sent out until the run-off election when it had been narrowed down to a "gay" woman and an American of African descent.

I was also bombarded with phone calls. I vote in every election and they reward me by sending me this trash?
