  1. I really wonder if not connected fans who have never seen the show walk away upset by their experience. Or does the clack set expectations. Because I don't think one out of the ordinary thing with one song would ruin a concert for them.

My guess? At least half would say "what a sweet gesture." The other half would be confused, and maybe upset. But I think your point about the availability of clack is a darn good one. IMO (and I frequently get taken to task for this viewpoint) that too much clack can be a bad thing. There are constant comparisons between what he did at this show and what he did at that show. (Example: the round box lid vs. the square box lid. I was rolling my eyes about that for over a week when that hit.) And soon, it feels to me as if someone can't just enjoy the moment but instead has to make comparisons.

Honestly, if the John Martin show had been my one and only concert -- I would have probably cried my eyes out and been extremely happy. But then, I'm a sap.

I also think -- well, what if the Waukegan 2006 Christmas show was the only one I had attended? Would I have let the "note" ruin my experience? Probably not. As it was, my only show for that tour was the next night at Merrillville, and I'm thrilled that I was able to see that magical moment (IMO) live and in person.

As KAndre said....one person's magical moment is another's WTF? And I see that luckiest1 types faster than I do.

jamar, great first post on the main thread. And I too feel that my life on the message boards, in a totally strange way, have helped me see some things way differently in my work life. But my question -- I though Dave Matthew's was going bald? He really still has hair? *g*

    :RedGuy: Just 'cause....

  2. See, I guess I'm perfectly happy that he wrote a song...but would be just as happy if he never wrote another song again. I think he could have a fantastic career as a "song stylist" (as someone described him not long ago). I know that songwriting is considered by critics to be the "gold standard" for having a musical career...and frankly, that idea burns my butt. My husband and I go around and around about that all the time, because he thinks songwriters who sing have more cred. Maybe that's true....but why? And why can't someone who sings and interprets songs and turns them into ART have a career without writing a song?

As far as the comments on the blog goes....I understand that some are simply joking. It's hard to tell tone in a written comment like that. But, at the same time, there's a consistent feeling I get that some just don't want him to do something, they NEED him to do something. Big difference. The key really is Clay -- what does he want? And as a fan, that's what I want for him to -- what he wants. Call me simplistic, that's fine, but that's really how I feel.

My final point -- there's lots of grey area between wanting to Clay write songs continually and Clay to never write another song again. I think that area sometimes gets lost, on both sides of the coin. The whole issue isn't a black and white thing. I'd certainly celebrate if Clay continues to work on his songwriting craft and comes up with another winner like LAA.

OK, I'm off the soapbox now.

Peanut butter and butter together? FANTASTIC!!! Love it.

  3. Oh yeah, that "Get the PM on the phone!" CMSU! :cryingwlaughter: And I was already :cryingwlaughter: thinking about last night's "Creature Comforts" show! Lawd Jesus, my hubby and daughter and I were wiping tears for 30 minutes. We had to keep telling hubby to SHUT UP because he'd be laughing and we couldn't hear the next hilarious comment coming out of some claymation creature's mouth. Now THAT'S some funny shit.:cryingwlaughter::cryingwlaughter:

Clay in Paris? oooh la la! Something about that Eiffel Tower has always reminded me of him, anyway.

ok details on this show...what network..and when is it on...I want to check it out.

Creature Comforts, CBS, 8:00 EDT Monday evenings

Sorry, don't know if it's on in Canada or not. From what I know, it's based on a British short film or TV series of the same name. I LOL'd a lot, and looks as if a few others did too.

Yup way to go too...I saw some other variations of this. I read someone even boasting that they posted as much on Clay blog comment...that he shouldn't be watching tv...but writing songs instead. I know they follow it up by smilies or grins to say its a joke...but really gets on my nerves. Makes these people sound heartless with Clay as their puppet...put in this world to please them...UGH. sorry just my pet peeve. I mean are they working 24/7? Don't they relax and unwind by watching TV???

No wonder Clay resists writing songs or downplays his own writing contributions. He writes one song and now some fans want him to spend all his time writing and working on his music. GEESH.

I think I saw the same boast that you did, Ansa. You're right -- it makes him sound like he should be a "dancing monkey" catering to the fans needs and desires. I can be as selfish as the next person when it comes to Clay (especially when it comes to getting tickets for shows), but in the end, I know it's about what Clay wants, not me. Again -- I'm just a fan who buys his stuff and goes to his shows. Doesn't give me free reign to tell him when he can work (or not) and what he should be doing (or not).

    Grrrrr...

Heh, and since he suggested I watch "The Riches," I suggested he watch "Creature Comforts." Suggested, not told. *g*

  4. But Clay DOES screech sometimes. Listen to some of the clack! He definitely has a tendency to use a high pitched screech from time to time! I have heard it many times, especially when he gets excited telling a story....

Maybe I don't hear it as much because I do the same thing myself -- when I'm extremely excited about something, my voice definitely gets louder and higher. My husband yells at me all the time about that! (And it's a trait I inherited from my mother -- Me: "Why are you yelling at me?" Mom: "I'm not yelling at you." Me: "Sure sounds like it...")

Or as couchie said, maybe when he's in bed with one of his harem....

*sniff* That was me who said that. *sniff*

    Kidding....

No offense to anyone, and maybe its understandable, but sometimes I think some in this fandom are too sensitive and have lost their sense of humor in regards to Clay. I have to think that the vast majority of people reading this were laughing and thought it funny. And then they moved on to the next bit and never gave it another thought.

I actually do agree with you on this. For me, it just really depends on my particular mood on a given day. 98% of the time, I'm fine with almost everything written about Clay, even the stuff that can be taken as a diss by others. But then there's the other 2%... I just wish I could predict when it happens for me. I think there are more than a few in the fandom that are like me too. Unfortunately, there are also a few in the fandom whose percentages run at least 50-50. Those are frustrating to me too.

Well, if Carrie's team is really good, they could make the nationals.

The national tourney is in Las Cruces, NM, the first week of August.

THE FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST, people. :scream:

Oh no!!! I thought you had that all worked out! Crap for you! And yet, I'm not going to hope that Carrie's team loses, because I want her to be a winner! Tough, tough situation.

ETA - why did I read the end of Muski's post to say the first week of ANGST?

    BWAH!!!

ETA: laughn, "Celebrity Fit Club" is a show on VH1 where a group bring together a bunch of C-list celebrities who've "let themselves go" and try to whip them back into shape with a diet and exercise plan. There are group activities and then every two weeks they "weigh in." The reason play and I are having a hard time with the word "screech" is because one of the "celebrities" this season is Dustin Diamond, who used to play "Screech" on "Saved by the Bell." He's showing himself to be a first class asshole -- snide, sexual, rude comments to all his other cast members (including Kim Locke), and he's simply not trying to lose weight. He's eating all the stuff he shouldn't be. He's a jerk, and no one on the show likes him. The rest of the cast is cool, but he's an idiot.

  5. Instead they use the screech, a word that I find particuarlly annoying because I am watching Celberity fit club right now.

You know, that was the word that set me off with this article too...and I also watch "Celebrity Fit Club." The connection must be there!

The rest of it I really did find mostly funny...but I'm sorry, IMO Clay does NOT screech. Yell, maybe. Express displeasure, you betcha. But screech? Maybe while he's in bed with someone special....

    I didn't just say that, did I?

  6. Took a sick day today. Hubby has his follow up appointment. If I don't accompany him he downplays things, and hides prescriptions, because he doesn't like to take meds. Also neglects to tell Dr. everything going on with him. Typical male.

Your husband and bottlecap's mom remind me of my mom as well, so I don't think it's a "male" thing. My belief is twofold: 1) they don't want to "bother" them, think it's rude that they keep bringing up each and every little thing. Of course, you tell parent/husband/wife that it's the doctor's JOB to care about these things, but it doesn't sink in. 2) I think money is also an issue. My mom is extremely frugal, and by telling the doctor about other things, that just adds more to the bill!

BTW -- {{{{{{{Clayzorback}}}}} on the money thing. I hear ya!

Does it make me a bad fan that I thought that Page Six mention was hysterical!!

    :cryingwlaughter:

I think they found out he lost his passport and made a joke out of it. The way it was written I can't imagine anything negative coming from it - or intended with it. I think they were just snarking on him losing his passport.

    Made me laugh anyway!

I hatesss commenting on any gossip page shstuff, but I'm totally intrigued as to why he would be going to Paris (if true). I can *totally* hear him saying, 'get the PM on the phone' (hell, I'm just glad he knows we have a PM and not a President, lolol). If the gossip mongers around him can't recognize a joke when they hear one - screw 'em! Vive l'Aiken!

Actually, since I'm the one that mentioned the thing in the first place -- I agree with both you ladies (except for the "bad fan" bit, hee). I did laugh a bit, but didn't like their phrasing on a few of the things. My problem. And yes, he probably was snarking to the airport people, which of course doesn't translate in the game of telephone tag very well. And Paris? Why is he going to Paris? Or was that more of the piece's attempted snark? Maybe we'll find out soon....

  7. :Morning:

play, sorry to hear about your mixup. I think I've finally got my travel plans straight, after the clusterf**k I did of making flight plans for Texas before everything truly shook out.

I guess I'll be watching "The Riches" on my lunch hour today. Glad to know I can find it for free. This is one show that I'd been meaning to watch from the beginning (because I LURVE me some Eddie Izzard *waves at djs*), and muski, I read the Entertainment Weekly blurb again yesterday too. Damn you Clay...I'll probably get hooked on this one now. (Heh...didn't even try for Jericho though...) I'm thinking that he's at home, rehearsing all day for the tour -- and then he comes home at night and just chills in front of the TV.

Speaking of TV, did anyone watch "Creature Comfort" last night? It's produced by the same people who made the Wallace & Grommit things...and it was hysterical!

I got a Google alert this morning for a Page Six blurb in Canada. I'm not going to bring it over, because most of the piece was bitchy-trying-to-pass-as-snarky, IMO....but the reason for the blurb in the first place? Clay lost his passport. Does this not sound like our guy? I think the man needs some of those chain things to hook things like keys, passports, etc. to his clothes!

The last line of the blog totally has me intrigued. I cannot wait to see what he's got going for us.

  8. Hey jamar -- glad you're here! Would you like a drink?

    :bier:

Caro, that's cool hearing that story about interviewing the first violinist in one of the orchestras, and what they had to say about Clay. And EEEEEEEE! Another musician!!!!!!!! Finally, spent some time poking around your blog -- it's neat!

  9. cindi, I've noticed that as well. When I've wanted to add a font color, I generally "hand" coded it ("[color =...) etc.

    HOWEVER....

I just tried clicking on the color link just now again, as research, and then, for some reason scrolled to the very top of the webpage. Guess what I found? The color palate! It was located over one of the pretty pictures of Clay in the banner. So, there seems to be a glitch that doesn't put the color palate where it's very accessable!

    Topic? Clay's colorful. 'Nuff said.

  10. One person's opinion here: I like the ellipsis with the phrase in the back -- totally agree with you on that one cindi. I don't believe "prove" needs to be italicized, though -- again, JMO. Finally, I do think the phrasing is good as is -- cindi's right in that the joke needs to play out accordingly. It was ME you can blame for being worried about copyright and trademark and all such s***, and I take it all back!

  11. I think it's more than work because ....

Of what Clay wrote in the liner notes of ATDW, and that Jaymes was in North Carolina for the last couple of JnaT concerts, even went out on the bus line with him one night, and did the Word of the Day on stage, which leads me to think that since Jaymes was in NC for the Charlotte and Greensboro concerts during Christmas week she may very well have spent Christmas there as well -- more than a working relationship. Then Jaymes was working the Champions for Change Gala in March in Raleigh -- not an EP function.

Just generally, and mostly from what Clay himself has written, she seems to be best buddy these days.

I agree that Clay and Jaymes' relationship seems to go into the "things that make you go hmmmmm..." category, and maybe they ARE "best buddies." But, at the same time....they could be working on things, true WORK things, behind the scenes that we'll never know about. Yes, even at Christmas. The thing is, we just don't know. As much as I have fun speculating about that kind of stuff for a while....it starts to feel a bit intrusive for me. Probably because there are some fans that take it to "totally true" stage, when as I said, we really don't know, because neither Clay nor Jaymes are talking. Should they talk? In my mind, most certainly not. They should be allowed to define their relationship, not the fans.

Maybe in 10 years, Clay will write another book and we'll find out more about a LOT of things.

  12. Ooops!

Jaymes, Jamie, both have been shipped with him... They all become interchangeable after awhile!

I know, my head is spinning with all the "J" names....

Thanks for the picture, I seem to remember looking at it now (but not keeping -- I'm only a semi-picture saver whore). I think what cracks me up is the jeans -- rolled up the calf like that. Actually, I stop laughing then because I start groaning looking at that nice calf...*sigh*

luckiest1, thanks for the pictures. KLo is looking good, and I love her smile -- it's totally infectious.

  13. First of all, I went back and doublechecked bottlecap's original suggestion, and it was worded "everything I have." For some reason, I remember her saying "everything I had."

After doing a little research though -- song titles cannot be copyrighted. However, they CAN be trademarked. Two different things. I think we'll be OK with this, as long as TC doesn't get too hyped over them.

But I'm not a lawyer either, I just do little bits of research.

  14. cindi, I like the red and black printing myself, but that's because they are my favorite colors in combination. I'll just invest in a new Clorox bleach pen to get rid of the coffee stains I'll inevitably get on the white shirt. *g*

Just checking, though, with two more things -- in order to get around possible copyright violations, I think "a thousand different ways" shouldn't be capitalized. Also, "everything I have" should be "everything I had," both to get around copyright again, and also because I think "everything I had" fits grammatical tense correctly with the rest of the sentence (but then I'm not an English major either...).

  15. Regarding the relationship between Clay and David Foster ... I believe their relationship is more than friends because it seems familial, but definitely not father/son. I get a "brother-in-law-ish" vibe due to the close personal relationship between Clay and Jaymes.

Hmmmm....I guess I've always assumed that Jaymes and Clay have a working relationship, and not a lot else. I know it seems strange to some people that they are seen in close proximity fairly frequently, but in many of those instances they could be considered work places. For example -- Jaymes was a person who contributed ideas for many of his tours, and so it doesn't seem strange to me that she attends more than a few shows. keepingfaith, I think I'm not quite sure what you mean by "close personal relationship" -- if you're talking strictly work too, or if you could be hinting at more than that....

I dunno...I get the feeling that there are some fans who WANT to ship Clay and Jaymes, just to fuel some fantasies that Clay could possibly be interested in THEM as an "approaching middle age" woman. (keepingfaith, I'm not talking about you here -- please don't take it that way!) And sure, if Clay and Jaymes are having that kind of relationship, more power to them. I guess I just have never seen it. Most of the things I've "heard" are simply that -- things I've "heard," from who knows what channels. And we all know how reliable those things are, right?

As for David's relationship -- mentor all the way. I think Clay's learning a LOT from the guy, both musically and in a business. Do I want a full album of ballads? Nah....but I wouldn't be totally surprised that we get one. Totally depends on that working relationship, and how much of a give-and-take David and Clay would allow with each other. Oh, and don't forget to work Clive in on this too. *g*
