#1 - Ready for your constant state of celebration

Recommended Posts

Ansa - Take good notes on your trip, cause I think everyone here wants a very long, very detailed recap of your first trip to see Clay in concert. eee! I can't wait to hear from you after the concert.

As for reviewers....

First, a big fat pffffttttt to the Washington Post guy. I never understood the need for movie/music/concert reviewers or critics in the first place. It really is only that one person's personal opinion they are spouting off. Do these guys have any real credentials that would make their opinion of a movie/album/concert more valid than anyone elses? I doubt it. Word of mouth from friends, family, and co-workers has more pull on my choices than what some journalist hack critic writes.

I don't want to give the WP guy more time that he deserves, but that last paragraph is a pretty blatant misrepresentation of Clay's playful explanation. I mean I have watched that CTT Clack( several times I might add) and I don't hear Clay do an "odd cackle" or say "shot her down". I mean, I wasn't at that concert, but it seems to me, you'd have to be pretty humorless, not to see that his comments were all tongue in cheek. Chruchmouse at the CH searched out some of this guys past reviews, and Clay is by no means his only victim, so perspective helps on this one.

I will just reiterate what I said at the CH:

I don't think such reviews, either in the long run or the short run really matter. And it never occurred to me that a review in the Washington Post was that particularly important (I guess one of the joys of living outside the Beltway). I've read the Post online for a number of years and it never occurred to me to check the entertainment review section, especially not for a concert. Except for Clay, I only go to one concert for an artist. And since the review comes out after the concert, it doesn't do me any good. And I neither go back to check the reviews of the previous year's concert nor do I read concert reviews in other locations, because, well, it's a different concert. And if I'm at the point I might buy a ticket, what some reviewer says isn't gonna make any difference to me. And frankly most reviews I read, the reviewer clearly doesn't live on the same planet I do. The only way I see Clay taking anything the WP critic said under consideration is if he offered some kind of constructive criticism - I seem to have missed any in that article. It didn't even seem like a real review - more like a hit-and-run, let-me-toss-this-off-before-the-deadline kind of deal.

As for the show at Wolf Trap - yeah, many people were unhappy, many people were ecstatic, I'm sure many more people fell along the spectrum. I don't know if I'm in the minority, but the "antics" simply did not rise to the level of "unprofessionalism" to me. Not for what boils down to be a fun summer pop tour with live performances. Fucked up? What happened to Ashlee Simpson on SNL was fucked up, in front of a nationwide audience, and she was mocked across the U.S., overseas and probably in space. And what does she do? Well, according to Yahoo! Music:

Ashlee Simpson's upcoming sophomore CD In Another Life -- which is due out on October 18 -- will include two songs inspired by her ill-fated performance on NBC's Saturday Night Live last fall. The songs "Beautifully Broken" and "Who Will Help Me When I Fall" both address how she felt about the fallout from the show which, through a sound mishap, exposed the fact that she had been singing with the help of a vocal backing track.

And she shows no sign of stopping any time soon.

I can live quite happily with occasionally silly Clay.

I still can't get over what an incredible job Clay does in his ability to take on the persona of the person he is covering in the early medleys especially.  The first time I saw him take on Paul MaCartney's rendition of Can't Buy Me Love I couldn't believe how accurate that head shake is/was.  Of course this was early in their career & many people might not recognize it but man it took me back.  I just can't imagine how hard it must be to sing & try to shake your head like that, but that is exactly what Paul use to do.

I'm so glad that Clay decided to make this show as big as it is.  He could have easily done an hour of covers plus a couple of new songs and I still would love the show because it's Clay & his voice is unbelievable but instead he took on this huge project & it is really a fantastic show.

I :::heart::: diamondjake

He really does a fantastic job embodying the performers in question. The McCartney head shake got me too...he had it down cold. His Elvis? For those few minutes, he IS Elvis. The other one that gets me is the Ricky Martin. I remember people saying "what's this windmill arm thing he's got going on?" and I was saying "boy, he watched that video a few times to get looking EXACTLY right."

WP guy went in with an agenda and wrote his review in order to get his check. The WDC thing had nothing to do with it, and I think if Clay had played the entire night totally straight, the guy probably would have written a WORSE review. JMO.

This review isn't going to make anyone hate Clay any more than a glowing review is going to make someone like Clay, IMO. Most people do tend to take reviews with a grain of salt anyway.

I got a mailing yesterday from my mother who lives in Canada. Included was a full color 5x7 picture of Clay from GMA. He's not doing any concerts anywhere near her. Guess Clay's made the big time in podunk Canada. It was just one of the stock pics we've already seen, so no new clack. Just thought it was interesting and a little random.

Cool - because with as little real advertisement this tour is getting, I think he's selling amazingly well.

Yeah. For the Toledo show, I was just checking a couple weeks ago and couldn't get anything but single tickets - that's on little promotion. I checked just now and could find a pair almost to the back.

I'm interested in some opinions. Should I hit my Clueless-about-Clay sisters with some Clack before for the concert, or just let them go in cold and be surprised? I keep looking at different clips, and wondering if I should preview a couple of sections on video or not. I'm not sitting with them during the concert, so it might be nice to explain who the back-up singers and band members are. On the other hand, they could be the ultimate not-just-us test subjects with no preconceptions about what they are going to see. Anyone have thoughts on this based on your experiences with family and friends?

You know, as much as the fans appreciate clack, I'm thinking most outsiders would not so much enjoy previewing the concert on the vomit-cam with so-so audio. There's nothing like their first concert experience. You might want to explain the concept and how the background singers are showcased.

Most of all you should be prepared to answer lots of questions at intermission. And maybe some clack at the ready for them to take with after the concert.

Also be prepared to answer lots of questions about the "interesting" fan behaviour at the concert.

Just dropping by to say hi! All my online time has been devoted to the Summer 2005 Clackapalooza, which I haven't had a chance to check in here lately!

I was at the Mohegan Sun Concert, which was great, except for the dead casino crowd. I've been so happy with how the tour has been going. Boyfriend sure knows how to put on a show, doesn't he? :)

Congrats couchtomato on your meet & greet. I suppose you could DO something that might bring out pissy Clay. Hee. You had better let him know that you & ansa are the owners of FCA. You should give him a card like the ones you sent out with your pins.

I can't imagine how you are going to get much work done for the next 2 weeks.
